what about the 1930s
Onyma Report This Comment Date: February 11, 2009 06:37PM
On this graph the numbers wouldn't be applicable for the 30's. This graph
deals with job losses by count based on the fact the population of the US hasn't
changed excessively last 2 decades. Going back to the 30's however the
population has changed dramatically so the numbers of jobs lost would not really
be comparable. What would be comparable would be a percentage of jobs lost then
and now and that would make for an interesting graph.

How about 1982? Bad downturn then. My hours were cut in '82, I was laid off in
'91, and I'm once again out of a job in '09. Gotta love it.

Sorry to hear that buddy ;(
Here's a thought .... you could come to Texas, work for me and we could starve
together. Like they say, misery loves company

Thanks, but I've got to stick around here to look after my mom. My daughter
just moved to Conroe, though, and my youngest son will soon be reporting to
Lackland AFB for basic training.

Quasi, you are right. 1982 was indeed a hard recession. If people are
interested in the chart showing more than just the last three mild recessions, I
suggest you check out the following page:

From what I see the current recession is still in the early stages of the
previous 2. We are still in the downturn phase and of course it looks a lot
worse because we are dealing with inflation issues and the spike in oil prices
we had and it looks really bad.
I just hope it does what happened before and their "stimulus package"
somehow actually helps and we bottom out and see the upward turn soon.
Just look at how many promises Obama has already broken. I think he actually did
make the right decisions for the most part and the campaign promises were made
in ignorance just to get elected. It's really no different from what most all
the previous presidents have done. I think we are all going to have to
"bend over and unclench" and deal with some higher taxes in the future
or our country is going to be so deep in debt we will never have a prayer of
even paying half of it off.
*edit* oops I was thinking dollars not jobs. I think a lot of those jobs are
lost for good with the situation a lot of these companies are in. What I think
should happen is the government and the auto industry somehow breaks the back of
the UAW unions and get's their wages and benefits more on par with the other car
companies. Then we need to stop outsourcing jobs just because labor overseas is
cheaper (that would require a lot of government intevention) and get those jobs
we lost back in our country.

I hope all the pork in this stimulus bill helps with our economy. Eating pork
always makes me feel better.

that bullshit "stimulus" plan is nothing more than campaign payoffs.

Let's just hope this is not the beginning of the end.
