Go ahead and spend more money overseas, hell we can't even cross a bridge
anymore!
We probably spend more to fix the streets in Iraq, just to get them bombed
again.
I think it's time to fix our own damn streets and bridges.

REALLY? The government has no experts on the payroll, no structural engineers or
inspectors, no records on how old a structure is or how long that type of
structure typically lasts before failures? No inspections are ever done? Where
DOES all that tax money go? Oh yeah! Hundreds of billions go to IRAQ!

Your Tax Money goes to the pockets of millions on welfare, food stamps,
fraud etc. thanks to BIG government, and like I said learn something about
structural engineering before opening your big mouth, sounds like when you go to

I will open my big mouth ANY time I please, freedom of speech, ever hear of it?
The CURRENT government (not just Bush) is responsible for the construction,
inspection, maintenance, and closing of bridges. Nobody (except those on it)
likes the welfare state we have created, but what about 300 BILLION going to
IRAQ? How about we put one hundred billion into finding or MAKING jobs for the
welfare recipients? No more welfare unless you are crippled, if you need daycare
then it is taken out of your wages. Part of that hundred billion (and the new
jobs for the welfare types) can go to repairing and building new bridges. It is
2007, lets not pretend there ARE no solutions, that we CAN'T make safe bridges
and keep them that way.

Chicago Tribune:
MINNEAPOLIS - The highway bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River on
Wednesday was rated as "structurally deficient" two years ago and
possibly in need of replacement.
That rating was contained in the U.S. Department of Transportation's National
Bridge Inventory database.
Jeanne Aamodt, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Department of Transportation,
said the department was aware of the 2005 assessment of the bridge. "We've
seen it, and we are very familiar with it," she said.
Aamodt said the department plans its bridge repairs using information from the
Bridge Inventory database.
Many other bridges nationwide carry the same designation that the I-35W bridge
received, Aamodt said.
Aamodt declined to say what the agency was going to do to address the
deficiencies found in 2005 and referred further questions to Dan Dorgan, state
bridge engineer and director of the bridge office. Dorgan wasn't available for
comment.
The deficiency rating is derived from a complex formula that evaluates many
factors and condenses them into an overall score. A score of 80 percent or less
indicates some rehabilitation may be needed; a 50 percent score or less
indicates replacement may be in order.
The I-35W bridge was rated at 50 percent. The rating data was provided to the
Star Tribune by the National Institute of Computer Assisted Reporting.
The inventory data also summarize the bridge's status as "structurally
deficient." Bridge components are ranked on a scale of 0 to 9, with 0 being
"failed" and 9 being "excellent."
In 2005, the bridge's superstructure -- meaning the physical conditions of all
structural members -- was rated at 4, records show. The bridge's deck was rated
5, and the substructure, comprised of the piers, abutments, footings and other
components, was rated 6.
In 2001, a research report on the bridge had found that it was unlikely to
experience any fatigue cracking in the trusses supporting its deck. The paper,
prepared by the University of Minnesota's Center for Information Studies,
evaluated both the main trusses and the floor truss of the bridge.
The report by the late Robert J. Dexter and others, concluded that the bridge's
deck "has not experienced fatigue cracking, but it has many poor fatigue
details on the main truss and floor truss system."

But he and his administration have had 7 YEARS to inspect and repair them. I am
not suggesting that all such bridges can be rebuilt completely in that time, but
temporary repairs for safety could have been done. Repairs that would last
several years until the bridges in question could be replaced or rebuilt. Most
politicians (Republican AND Democrat) just pass the buck to the next guy
elected, and don't give a shit.

Now if you can read, tell me who was going to repair the bridge ?
FYI the Minnesota Department of Transportation is State controlled and not under
the Federal Government and if you can do a little more checking I bet that the
bridge wasn't built by the Federal Government.

Bridge failures are nothing new. They have been occurring since the very first
bridge was ever constructed, which was eons before George W. Bush became POTUS.
If there is any blame to be placed, it is squarely with the Minnesota Department
of Transportation, as it is their responsibility to have the bridges in that
state fully inspected by competent and experienced structural engineers every
two years (yearly would be even better), and not by some marginally competent
affirmative action beneficiary who was hired for reasons other than his/her/its
qualifications. I have seen this sort of thing happen first hand, and on more
than one occasion, right here in Georgia.
According to reports I am hearing, that bridge was showing signs ten years ago
that there were problems.
Of course, this won't stop the democrats from trying to gain some type of
political advantage from this tragedy, as these people have no moral scrupals
whatsoever.

Oh please, the ones who fucked that up were the assholes who built the damn
thing. Politics didn't come into play on that one, just shitty ass engineers. We
had something similar (an engineering screw up) in my own hometown. A two lane
exit/entrance ramp for our local interstate. Well, we only use one of the lanes
because the bridge was built wrong and can't support two lanes of traffic.
Idiots.

Here's the reality of it all : roads and bridges are built by contractors
within each state (with or without federal funds) and once they are constructed
are the sole responsibilty of the individual state they are constructed within
to maintain. The federal government doesn't contruct the highways, nor maintain
them, they only either contribute to their funding or not, plain and simple
!
The above is just another shit slinging fest instigated by some dumb shit lookin
to blame the fed for poor maintenance by the state even after a fed inspection
revealed risk of potential failure of the structure plenty long enough ago to
have avoided the failure of the structure had their findings been utilized.
Some people manage to get both feet and even other body parts in their mouth

Just a clue, but really, fed/bush
bashers ought to get their facts straight before engaging their keeboards and
making phenomenal asses outta themselves.

Maintenance for roads and bridges is and always has been responsibility of the
state governments. Maintenance is done on the states schedule with possibly
some funds from federal government and performed by private contractors. Bush
is not to blame for every bad thing that happens in the world.
