If one has the inclination and time to give it, Linux is a hell of an operating system and it really isn't that difficult to learn (except for maybe some Mac-aholics who can only point and click). If I had another decent hard drive good I'd at least dual boot again but alas, I am still bound by the fetters of Windows. Things will change eventually. They always do.

In total honesty I know I've been spoiled by my association with Ubuntu. Having become so accustomed to the total customization available to me, Windows and Mac OSes just frustrate me to no end. Being able to custom tailor my machines to be and act how I want them to instead of what some corporate entity decides for me is much more fulfilling.

Sometimes these desires lead to some serious head bangin against hard objects from time to time but that pain is short lived compared to the overwhelming frustration I feel every time I have to get on a "pay for play" OS based machine

Thanks for the offer Digger. I actually need a bit more hardware than another drive now that I think about it in order to do it right without overloading my current power supply. I remembered I had to put the old unit back in when the new one I bought died right after the warranty expired. I'd rather have two PCs of course. It isn't a high priority in my life at this time anyway. I'm fortunate to have anything that works.

Yeah Blah, it's pretty sad the cheezy choices manufacturers make in power supplies they use. At least you are knowledgeable enough to understand those limitations and the impact expecting too much from a small PS can have on your system

I would never use anything smaller than at least a 450 watt PS for even a simple PC build and prefer MUCH larger for my own stuff, both as a safety margin and for peace of mind. My hot rod has a 1500 and the server box has a 1200 watt (which problee should be transposed but ...), with the smallest other PS in the remaining machines here at the casa bein a 750 watt

The last PSU I bought was pretty cheap so I got what I paid for. My PC is so old I'm almost embarrassed to tell you what it is. I used to have a lot more computers but now down to one old PC and damaged notebook. Both work fine for us but they've had to be nursed along. I keep hoping to score another freebie laptop to fool with. I know they are getting SO cheap but I am SO broke. I work on PCs now and then for people so who knows what could come up. "The cobbler's children go barefoot." I got my fingers mentally crossed. There have been a couple of possibilities and still may be one in the mix eventually. A neighbor has one her kid busted but she can't afford to get it fixed (by me or anyone else) and said she might just recycle it and I said if you do then recycle it to me. I will fix it myself for free but not for anyone else except for family and best buddies.

Luckily when times were better I built myself a house full of toys. 2 of 'em lost their minds in the move to the new digs here in the sticks. The server lost it's GUI and I'm gonna hafta drag it to my sisters place to hook it to an ethernet connection so I can add in 2 short lines of code in the terminal and get the GUI back up.

The hot rod really took a major dump on me though, shows no power, won't even light up the USB LED light I use for testin USB ports. I messed with it for a while, then found something more interesting to play with but hafta get back on that horse soon 'cause I miss it and .... it's loaded with the fullest array of cool toys and programs.

Just about had it with the wireless internet crap service from Sprint though, especially since I found a satellite ISP offerin 12mb service for the same $$ I'm payin for 1mb of wireless that won't even stay connected for any longer than about 1 minute at a time, and no, I'm not being facetious, it's really that bad.

Here's hopin my buddy quasi is havin better luck with his

Only a couple of disconnects here and overall speed is far superior to dialup, even when factoring in the occasional slow down. No problem staying within my limits, either. Sorry you're not having better luck with it, Kim.

I presume you know how to TS a PSU but at a glance it seems to point there.

I had a shitload of PC parts I had to let go of in a recent move too. Most of it was shit though and it needed to go anyhow. I recycled the equivalent of 7 computers in parts. At my worst I kept it to 4 machines running concurrently but none of them were anything to brag about.

Good to hear it's workin for ya quasi. I knew when I signed up I was right at the boundary of their service area but thought initially it would suffice but have changed that view due to the constant disconects.

Yeah Blah, that seems like the likely culprit but since the PS itself is lightin up I think before I go any further the best course of action will be to unplug everything and reinsert all the plugs to see if it's not just a faulty connection from jostling it during the move.

I have an Antec 1000 PS sittin here gatherin dust so if I need it at least I have a good spare. I have a PS tester I could whip out on it but preferring to do it the hard headed way I'd rather tinker with it 1st since that wastes more time

In my move I had a big garage sale, waddn goin well so I made a deal to a cat for everything, including a box of new 'puter hardware that I wish I'd have kept but I needed the cheddar more than the parts. Still have a pile of old Mobos and such junk harware parts that shoulda gone bye-bye, just haddn found the right place to take 'em yet though

Hey Kim, where to you have your Sprint modem mounted? I figure you probably already thought of this but I got a USB extension cable and hung mine in the window - much stronger signal that way than in the middle of the room.

Since I'm locked into a 2yr gig with 'em I'm considerin switchin my cell over to their service so I can at least get somethin outta the contract or I may just take the hit and pay 'em the friggin $200 termination fee and tell 'em adios once I get the satellite service .... jury's still out

I'm interested to see how well it works during the frequent thundershowers we have here from mid June through Sept. I considered a satellite dish system but dismissed it early on because those used for TV around here are notorious for losing signal during our heavy rains.
