When I first entered management I made the mistake of often giving the most difficult jobs to the best people. From a business standpoint it makes sense, especially when you're the one who will get the flack when a job you delegated gets fucked up, but in the long run it doesn't pay to annoy your good people with constant pressure. Fortunately I was able to work it out with that crew and we became simpatico. Lesson learned, respect goes both ways.

We've had round after round of redundancies for the past year or two. All the good management are gone. Now have a bunch of people who have no idea who we are or what we do, which is kind of nice in that they let us just do shit and get it done; but also terrible because our old managers absolutely had our backs, supported 100% and all that good will is just gone.

I have always had that with my team. I'll defend them to the death; if they fuck up, I will make damn sure we're not stuck with the blame, and smack them privately in the background. Nobody else needs to know.

I've had good managers and bad managers and learned from both. Unfortunately, upper management doesn't always understand or they've simply forgotten that people aren't machines. This is one of the things that worry me about AI being used to replace people, the human element will get lost completely and people expendable. I've heard from a couple of people at the local Walmart that their scheduling is now done by AI and it's chaos, no regular hours or days, all over the place, and they can't plan anything in advance on their personal time because it's so random. As someone who also had to contend with and often override an early product ordering program, from what I see on the shelves in the store I suspect AI does their ordering with a similar lack of awareness.
