You can't say that

I'm not going to delve into this too deep, but obviously free speech has always been a subject close to me, which is why this site exists.

Looking at the examples in your post, I don't think eg Rosanne and this is the same;
One is a bunch of people getting pissy and her getting fired.
The other is the government actively stepping in to do the firing.

Part of freedom of speech is acknowledging that there's people that will say things you don't like. You are free to respond how you wish to that; advertiser boycotts, whatever. It's all part of it.

The whole cancel culture thing has been pretty crazy for a long time, but it's different when the government gets involved. That should be a concern to both sides.

"The other is the government actively stepping in to do the firing."

That is not what happened.
Why would you believe that?

Kimmel was canned for the same reason as Colbert; their shows ratings were in freefall.
Their shows were losing advertisement revenue

It turns out there are a lot of people that are sick and tired of the constant drone of orange man bad.

Disney was directly threatened by the FCC chairman who said in mob boss terms they could take care of the problem the easy way or do it the hard way. Thin skinned Trump has been threatening Kimmel and the other late-night hosts for a long time, even pointing at Kimmel saying he was next after Colbert was shown the door over similar corporate fears of the FCC squashing their deals. The oligarchs are capitulating to the regime.

Here he is saying what quasi doesn't want to hear.

Interview with FCC chairman Brendan Carr where the "we can do this the easy way or the hard way" ..once again, if you're not lazy and listen to the whole thing you will see a different meaning.
FCC has rules. Kimmel broke the rules. Fact.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas sharply criticized the head of the Federal Communications Commission for urging ABC to crack down on the now-benched late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, calling the Trump appointee's comments "dangerous as hell" and comparing his move to a mafia shakedown.

ABC, owned by Disney, took "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" off the air indefinitely on Wednesday, two days after Kimmel faced criticism for his comments on conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination. Just hours before the company's decision, FCC Chair Brendan Carr had publicly urged ABC to "take action" in response to Kimmel's remarks, saying in an interview: "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."

On his podcast Friday, Cruz called Carr a "good guy" but skewered him for his outspoken intervention.

"I gotta say, that's right out of 'Goodfellas.' That's right out of a mafioso coming into a bar, going, 'nice bar you have here, it'd be a shame if something happened to it,'" the Texas senator said, mimicking a mob boss's accent.

Kimmel had drawn conservatives' ire for saying during his monologue on Monday's show: "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it." Kimmel also mocked President Trump's reaction to the shooting.

Cruz had little sympathy for Kimmel, whom he called "profoundly unfunny" and "bitter and nasty." The senator also called the comedian's disappearance from the airwaves a "fantastic thing" and argued his show was preempted because he "flat-out lied" about Kirk's killing.

But the senator warned that the FCC chair's approach could set a risky precedent.

"If the government gets in the business of saying, … 'we're going to ban you from the airwaves if you don't say what we like,' that will end up bad for conservatives," Cruz said.

"Let me tell you what will happen: Going down this road, there will come a time when a Democrat wins again, wins the White House," he added. "They will silence us, they will use this power, and they will use it ruthlessly. And that is dangerous."

Asked about Cruz's comments Friday, Mr. Trump called Carr a "courageous person" and said he disagrees with the senator.

Carr called for action on Kimmel in an interview Wednesday with right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson. The FCC commissioner — a staunch Trump ally — called Kimmel's remarks "some of the sickest conduct possible," and suggested it would be appropriate for ABC to suspend Kimmel. He also said the independent companies that own ABC's local affiliates ought to "push back" against the network and possibly take Kimmel's show off the air, pointing to FCC rules requiring broadcast TV stations to act in the public interest.

Shortly after Carr's comments on Wednesday, media giants Nexstar and Sinclair Broadcast Group — which each own dozens of ABC affiliate stations — announced they would preempt Kimmel's show, condemning Kimmel's remarks about Kirk's assassination.

Nexstar has a deal pending to purchase rival station owner Tegna, which will require FCC approval. A Nexstar spokesperson told CBS News: "The decision to preempt 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' was made unilaterally by the senior executive team at Nexstar, and they had no communication with the FCC or any government agency prior to making that decision."

Later Wednesday, an ABC spokesperson said the show will be "pre-empted indefinitely," taking Kimmel off the airwaves nationwide.

The move drew outrage, with the FCC's lone Democratic appointee, Commissioner Anna Gomez, accusing ABC of engaging in a "shameful show of cowardly corporate capitulation" that "has put the foundation of the First Amendment in danger."

"This FCC does not have the authority, the ability, or the constitutional right to police content or punish broadcasters for speech the government dislikes," she said in a statement.

ABC's decision added to a weeklong debate over free speech in the wake of Kirk's death, as conservatives and Trump administration figures have called for consequences against anybody who mocks, celebrates or makes light of the assassination.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has celebrated Kimmel's indefinite departure from the airwaves — and suggested Thursday that TV networks should "maybe" lose their licenses over negative coverage.

"They'll take a great story and they'll make it bad," Mr. Trump told reporters on Friday, arguing coverage of him is overwhelmingly negative. "See, I think that's really illegal, personally."

"Why would you believe that?"

"Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr issued a threat Wednesday against ABC and Disney, suggesting he would take action over comments made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about the alleged Charlie Kirk assassin. "

..

"Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or, you know, there's going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."

..

Carr signaled that an apology from Kimmel would be a "very reasonable, minimal step" but also floated a "suspension" by the network as a potential remedy. He also called on licensed broadcasters, particularly those not owned by Disney itself, to "push back" against the House of Mouse and threaten to preempt its content if action isn't taken.

Yeah! Why?

From things I've seen it looks like a lot more people are cancelling Disney+ than subscribing to it, so ultimately it's probably going to cost more than it was losing. But whatever.

Either way, I've done some searching around (not including reading .. err .. judge judy above) and it certainly sounds to me like there's truth in it that the FCC put pressure on the decision, and therefore I go back to my original statement; if the government is getting involved, then that's something you should all be worried about.

People weren't screaming about Colbert because the chairman of the FCC didn't state an opinion on him. So again I'm going back to.. it's different. A federal official should probably not be talking about these things IMO, and should be leaving the agency to deal with any breaches of the rules.

Incidentally, I don't know "the rules" but what rule did he break? Looking for an "explain like I'm 5" answer here.

I've watched the Kimmel piece in question and I can't see anything wrong. He stated that MAGA are doing anything to make sure he's not seen as one of them, and trying to score political capital off it. All I need to do is read any of the news sources, incl Fox (man that link above took me down a rabbit hole, there was something like 40 articles on Kimmel on Fox News website in the past 3 days) and it seems absolutely true to me. And even if it's not "absolutely true" that the right are trying to score points, it was clearly an opinion. Which I thought was meant to be protected.

Incidentally, the "other side" appears to be doing the exact same thing. So yes, once again I'm going to say both sides are the same.

I don't read Twitter so maybe I'm missing something.

I'm reminded of the moment in Crocodile Dundee when they're in the bush and she asks him what he thinks about the possibility of nuclear war, or something to that effect. He said, "Who's gonna hear it out here?" I don't like that the nuclear arsenal exists and being unconcerned about the US arsenal being in the hands of the lunatic in the Whitehouse at the moment is shortsighted. You will hear it out there. I hope, Anon, that you're simply saying that there's nothing you can do about it so why worry which may be a healthy attitude, but don't think for a second that if it all goes to hell you won't be affected.

There are two answers to that:

- the death of the lie called Manifest Destiny makes a better world.

- they said the same thing about the fall of the Babylonian Empire. The earth still spins. Now look at yourself from a top down
point of view: you and Kim, for all that you don't like each other, both have the brains to live where you do.

"He stated that MAGA are doing anything to make sure he's not seen as one of them"

the opposite.. Kimmel said “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk”
and that “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”

quasi read your comment and didn't correct you....telling of his character and ability to have a rational discussion.

rules..
from [www.pbs.org] (liberal propaganda)
Hours before ABC, which is owned by the Walt Disney Co., pulled Kimmel off the air, Carr appeared on conservative commentator Benny Johnson’s podcast, saying that broadcasters are “entirely different than people that use other forms of communication.”

“They have a license granted by us at the FCC that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” Carr told Johnson. “I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct to take actions, frankly on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” Carr likened Kimmel’s comment to “news distortion,” which is against FCC’s rules for broadcasters.

The commissioner’s comments were widely interpreted as being addressed to ABC, Kimmel’s employer, and the network’s independently-owned affiliates. The independent stations, as well as ABC — because it’s a network that also owns stations — fall under the FCC’s purview.

So yeah, it's not in the public interest to go on television and lie about who committed murder. It was well known when the show was recorded who the shooter was and that he was not a conservative, he merely came from a conservative family.. it was not Kimmel's opinion, it was a lie.

So common sense prevails, good. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the 5% stock price drop between the 17th and 19th for Disney.

As I said; if the government is shutting down speech, that should be a concern to all of you. This shouldn't be a left v right thing, and it certainly looked like that was the case.

Anyway, can we shut the fuck up about it now? And Kirk? And Trump? Honestly the last 2 weeks has been like wading through diarrhoea.
