If I were gonna take a SWAG at it I'd say it might be a water mocassin. Hard to
tell if it's a pit viper or not from that angle/view but the suddenly widened
body close behind the head is a trait of mocassins, though they're usually
darker than this one is too, so who knows

the stripes are Moccasin-ish, but the grey is too light and the stripes on his
head are wrong.

I once pulled my car up to my mailbox in the dark, reached into it, and, by
touch alone, regognized there was a snake in it. I froze for a second then
realized it was dead, but HOLY SHIT. I think one of the neighborhood kids was
pranking my roommate's daughter and got me instead.
