Luckily when I've encountered somethin like that it was when tryin to install somethin that just waddn quite right. Most times simply closin out the terminal will clear up fubars like this, though sometimes it leads to the tried and true hard boot before all's right with the world again

I may hafta add in Windows 7 dual boot capability to get all the interface functions workin between my new receiver and the media server ... that blows monkey chunks
