That is a cool photo. I was wondering if the spokes on the trailer wheels were
so much thicker to handle the weight, and if so I wonder why they didn't also do
the rear wheels on the vehicle.

tongue weight of the trailer is 10% of the total trailer wieght
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: May 09, 2012 02:20AM
There is no way that trailer's tongue weight could get down to 10%, the wheels
are too far to the rear.
fossil_digger Report This Comment Date: May 09, 2012 04:12PM
that is how it is figured....look it up
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: May 09, 2012 04:58PM
It is also simple machine called a fulcrum and lever. The trailer axle is the
fulcrum. Look it up.
With the wheels so far back on the trailer all of the load weight in the trailer
is forward of the fulcrum and the tongue weight will be much greater than the
ideal range of 9-15% of the trailer weight. There is no way in that trailer to
balance the load over the axle to get the TW right.

My brain can beat up your brain. LOL

Seriously, it is very simple physics and I know
you know it. It's too obvious not to. I know I know, you just wanna banter. It's
ok. Really.

hell, don't believe me i don't know wtf i'm talking about, my dad only had a
trailer factory for 10 years

I've read that before and understand. I don't think you're FOS or that you are
wrong about that but I don't think you're understanding what I am pointing out
about the particular situation illustrated in the picture; the weight
distribution is going to be very different from a trailer that has the fulcrum
(wheels/axle) located more toward the middle of the trailer. Anyway, it doesn't
much matter, does it? Unless of course you are actually trying to load that
trailer and get the tongue weight where you want it. It will make a big
difference, that's all I'm saying.
fossil_digger Report This Comment Date: May 10, 2012 01:07AM
yeah, if you load a trailer like a moron and put the heaviest things in the
gooseneck it will be a helluva lot heavier tongue weight. but if you load it
correctly, it will be 10% average.

The trailer in your photo and the one above are totally different. That one
has the wheels fairly far towards the mid-point of the trailer and a full set of
4. In the above photo they are right at the back. I'm going 40% of the above
trailer will be on the hitch easily... basic physics. The weight distribution of
the top trailer will be very close to a 4 wheeled car, which is in the 50/50
range. There is no way to put much, if any, of the load behind the trailer axle
to balance it.
fossil_digger Report This Comment Date: May 10, 2012 02:20AM
the last pic was an example of a gooseneck horse trailer tandem axle with a 10%
tongue weight, wheels slightly ahead of the rear. a single axle as pictured in
the post will not be any different than that if loaded correct with the heaviest
items over the rear axle in the trailer. it will however be extremely squirely
on the road because of the weight shift yanking that little truck around, but it
is not designed to carry very much to start with, so an argument about tongue
weight is pretty useless in this case.
