Yeah I remember that episode too. It's where they were in space somewhere and there was a random alien who they had to make first contact with and decide whether to interfere in their lives or not, with some form of consequences.

There may also have been an evil alien who was generally making life hard for reasons which may or may not make any sense.

That about sum it up?

Yes. Of course you are all correct. It is also the one that Spock goes into heat and has to go get Vulcanized or something. I don't think an unknown ensign dies is that one but they do have a fight scene between Kirk and Spock with the standard Star Trek fight scene music.
