I have personally done that, I repaired a desktop for my now ex mother-in-law
many years ago.
Was a socket-7, she was a heavy smoker, had several cats, open slots on the back
of the case.
The MB was disgusting, a toothbrush, some dawn, and a lot of clean warm water
afterward.
Blew it out with compressed air, let it dry, and it worked fine.
All the components are sealed, the detergent is an electrolyte, however if
properly rinsed and dried it is a moot point.

Late-80's I worked as PC tech in a retail store. We had a company bring in an
office system (286 IIRC) for repair as it wouldn't boot. Long story short,
couple of the back plates were missing and the warehouse mice had set up shop
inside it. Used pink packing material to build a huge nest for themselves.
None inside the PC when I opened it but the MB was covered in piss and mouse
feces. Tried to revive it but that 286 never turned another cycle again. The
secretary who's desk it came off of wasn't too impressed
