you'd be much better off with a shotgun. Your aim might not be so good at 3 am and it you start dishing out slugs, you might kill other innocent people in your house or even the neighbors.

I agree with ya blinkie a shotgun is actually the best case all around home defense weapon, just hard to keep one on the nightstand by my bed like my trusty pistola

It all comes down to environment. Jackson is kind of right - because there is such a gun culture in the US a criminal is going to suspect that the homeowner is probably armed and therefore be armed himself, so Mrkim, pro, Frostie, fossil, quasi, etc would therefore be justified having a gun in their house to protect themselves. Not sure where jackson is from, but he/she may be from a country where gun ownership is rare and gun control laws are restrictive. Therefore homeowners are unlikely to be armed so a criminal is also unlikely to be.

My personal view, for what it's worth, is that I feel safer for myself and my family living in a country with strict gun control laws (so that the chances of me, or a loved one, being killed is lower), than I think I would in a country with easy access to guns therefore requiring me to arm myself.

Just because you are not allowed to own a weapon does not mean the criminals don't have one. Criminals do not care about laws or they would not be criminals, so gun laws don't matter to them. Gun crimes may have gone down in your country but they do still happen and crime happens probably even more now. Violent crimes still occur even without guns, they just choose some other weapon. Even during the stone age murders were being committed, they just used rocks and clubs.

jgoins - please read what I actually said before spouting off. I never said that criminals here are unlikely to carry guns because they can't get them, I said they are unlikely to carry guns because they don't feel the need to. That said, criminals, petty ones at least, are usually not the smartest or richest of people, so the fact that guns are hard to come by here probably does contribute to them not having a gun.

Also, our gun crime has not gone down and crime has not risen due to any change in gun law - the laws have always been strict.

Well I won't say they can pry my gun from my cold dead fingers because that is just crazy. If they decide to take guns away from us they can come get the ones they know about that were registered when I purchased them but they will have a hard time finding the ones that were purchased elsewhere legally and have no paper trail.

Gak, just because there are strict gun control laws does not mean you and your family are safer. It just means that the criminals will most likely carry knifes when they invade you home if they can't afford to get a gun on the black market. Personally I would rather get into a gun fight then a knife fight because I am better trained for that than with a knife. People who invade homes are not likely to do so completely unarmed because they want better odds of escape if found by the home owner.
