take with you for protection?

Always have some thick undergrowth closer to you than the gator to take cover
behind. Most gators will dive into the water rather than confront an adult human
anyway unless they have no escape route, or some dumbass has been feeding them
which causes them to associate humans with food with no differentiation between.
Just don't splash around at the edge of the water, that's asking for trouble.
