A truly awesome, tough and versatile aircraft that was nearly sent to the scrap
pile prior to Desert Storm.
I saw a special on Wings about 'em and one A-10 pilot said he was hit in the
wing by a missile, saw the engine injest the wing shards and die .... then in a
few seconds it refired and limped the rest of the way back to the base with a
good part of the wing completely gone !
If I were wanting to launch a ground assault I'd send these fuckers in in waves
for about 24 hrs. then have the ground troops sweep through to mop up what
(little) was left of the enemy forces.

My father design the wings and most of the A-10. He worked at the plant in
LI Farmingdale,NY. He was the last one in the building when the plant shut down
in the late 80's.

If that's true your father helped design one of the best airplanes in the
world, something to be proud off no doubt.
