This is from a Hispanic who lives in Texas. He's had a column in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram and as you can see, expresses himself very well.
ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL
I can almost assure you that everyone who is a true American was sickened when
you saw multitudes of protesters carrying Mexican flags protesting the new
Immigration Reform Bill in the Senate. This display of Mexican flags should give
you a heads up on where these protesters allegiance lies. Their hearts are in
Mexico and their bellies are in the United States.
As an American of Mexican Heritage I want to set the record straight. American
Hispanics are not all thrilled with illegal immigration. I, for more than 20
years, tried desperately to bring this national debacle to the attention of the
American people. I had the privilege of writing for several newspapers,
appeared on national and local TV and radio programs, and was asked by many
political groups to address this serious problem affecting my former community
(north Fort Worth), city, state, and our country. Many will question how I
can speak on this subject with some authority. My simple answer is: I lived
with the problem! Trust me, it was no picnic. Never in my life (I'm 68) had I
witnessed the lawlessness, the deterioration of my community, and the black
market criminal underground activities attributed to the influx of illegal
immigrants.
To add injury to insult, politicians soon caved in to the many demands of
illegal immigrants. Notably: bilingual education, bilingual ballots, welfare
aid, free medical care, etc. Through all this national disgrace allowed by our
politicians, have you all noticed that no one ever blames the useless, corrupt,
and disgraceful government of Mexico? In contrast, they lambaste and criticize
our country. How does that grab you?
When I addressed the dangers of our porous border between Mexico and the United
States, and the lax security of our nation, no one paid attention. As I
observed the situation, the problem was perceived to be between American
Hispanic communities and illegal immigrants. White Americans, it seemed, assumed
that the problem was not theirs to deal with. In other words they were asleep
at the wheel. However, 9-11 soon woke them up. Lets be honest with each other
here, white Americans vote in far larger numbers than Hispanics do. And most
politicians (Democrats and Republicans) in our city, state, and federal
governments are white. Thus, who is more suited to fix this national disaster?
I'm sure most of you know what the answer is.
In summation, I'm pleading with white American voters to join me in sending our
politicians (Democrats and Republicans) a strong message that we will not
tolerate illegal immigrants telling us how to make government policy that will
make it easier for them to break our laws. Hope you will join me in this
endeavor in our upcoming elections.

country away !

I think my thoughts on this issue have been well documented here many times
over, much to the chagrine of the bleeding heart liberalists contention here who
seem either uneducated or at least undereducated on the political/socioeconomic
ramifications of this issue and seem content to allow continued willfull
lawlessness while happily handing out untold boatloads of our tax dollars to
illegal members of our society, and then when cornered on the issue try the old
"redirect tactic" by trying to focus attention on other issues and
their various impacts, but .....
Here's what a local retired college professor had to relate on the issue as well
....
" Illegal Immigration And Cheap Labor??
I can't figure out what rights the illigals want. They already have more rights
than those of us who live, work and pay taxes and insurance. Just what rights
are they missing??
The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth, a farce, and a lie. There is no
such thing as "cheap labor."
Let's take as an example a Mexican national who illegally crosses the border
with his wife and five children and inspect the impact of his "cheap
labor".
He takes a job for five or six dollars an hour. At
that wage, with six dependents he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year
gets an "earned income credit" of up to $3,200 free.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent, food stamps, and free
(no deductible, no co-pay) health care.
His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school, and require bilingual
teachers and books that taxpayers get to provide, at an additional premium over
single language books and teachers (bilingual teachers, translators and extra
pages aren't free!).
He doesn't have to worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners
insurance. Taxpayers get to provide the funds to insure he'll have Spanish
language signs, bulletins and printed materials for every government document
he'll need to apply for any service or other "entitlement".
He cannot be harassed, or sued by a member of mainstream society as such actions
are labeled as racist or at the very least a violation of his civil rights .
He and his family receive the equivalent of $20 to $30 an hour in taxpayer
supplied benefits, while working Americans are lucky to have $5 or $6 an hour
left after paying their bills and his, and paying for increased crime
prevention, incarceration costs, graffiti clean up, and trash cleanup.
Cheap labor? YEAH RIGHT"

Beast, "When the Irish and the Italians came to the US in the early 1900s
they marched with the flag od Ireland and Italia when they would go on strike
for better wages."
When these immigrants came into this country they came here legally through
Ellis Island. The issue is not immigration, it is illegal immigration. Most of
us have not problem with people coming here from other countries we only have a
problem with them coming her illegally.
How would we know American would not do the jobs illegals do if they never get a
chance to take those jobs. Here in Arkansas if there was a job that would pay
$15.00 an hour I can assure you it would be filled by Americans of all races.
My daughter and her husband are working on a farm for the harvest at $8.00 an
hour which is the same job that used to be done by illegals before the owner was
caught using illegals. Once he was caught the jobs opened up to everyone else
and he still gets people to do the harvests. I don't believe there are any jobs
Americans won't do, but the employers have to pay at least a minimum wage and
that is the issue. Illegals are hired so that the employer can pay them less
per hour than they would have to pay legal workers. What we have to do is dry
up the job market for illegal workers by catching and prosecuting the employers
who hire them. If illegals no longer have work in this country they will go
back to Mexico or where ever they came from and stop coming. There may be too
many of them to deport but if there is no work they will deport themselves. Our
only ther option is to shoot them and bury them it would be cheaper than
deporting them. Find out what Mexico does with it's illegal problem from it's
southern border.

Anonymous@94109, the statements you make only serve to point up your own lack
of understanding about the issue and its ramifications.
While it would seem reasonable that application for social services SHOULD raise
a red flag triggering action by the INS, this is not the case at all.
Many illegals here own cars, homes and still manage to fill the emergency rooms
and ambulatory clinics of the county run (state funded) hospitals and many can
be seen using their again state funded food stamp cards at the grocery
stores.
I suggest anyone stating disbelief of my statements come down here and see for

Why do you have to accuse people of being racist just because they want to end
illegal immigration?
There are lots of LEGAL Mexican-Americans that want to end illegal immigration
too. Are you saying that they're racist against their own people?
Think about it. What if more than 11 million Afghanis sudenly wanted to
illegally immigrate to England? Do you think that keeping those millions from
flooding the UK would be an insensitive and racist decision?
I'm all for letting people come to the U.S. for a better life -- but every
immigrant should be required to start out their new life as a legal citizen with
respect for American laws and who contributes to American society -- instead of
breaking U.S. laws to get here and becoming a drain on society. (And no matter
what you say -- people who don't have medical insurance and don't buy auto
insurance and don't pay thier fair share of income taxes and send their kids to
American schools and smuggle drugs and commit other crimes while visiting the
U.S. and who file for food stamps and other benefits -- are a big drain on
society.)
Why do illegal immigrants think they have the right to make demands on Americans
and the U.S. government? How would Mexico feel if 11 million Americans stormed
into their country, broke thier laws and started making demands?

The overwhelming majority of people exercised about immigration are not
remotely racist, prejudiced, bigoted or nativist. They are, however,
unapologetic patriots, believers in the American ideal, the American identity
and the American culture. They are not slaves to an exclusively capitalistic
perspective, realizing that economic considerations – pro and con – are only
one part of the equation.
It goes without saying that immigration is a multi-faceted problem because it
touches on so many issues, including the rule of law, national security,
national sovereignty, our national identity, the welfare state, demography, the
economy, and politics.
It's hard to deny that the catalyzing events were the audacious protests of
illegals throughout the country, waving Mexican flags, disrespecting the
American flag and demanding, sometimes in Spanish, their "civil
rights." Perhaps Sen. Ted Kennedy's pathetic pandering to this burgeoning
new constituency contributed to the national wake-up call as well.

The problem with the illegals in this country have been around for years but is
only now making the evening news so now people think it just started. I
remember my childhood in the 50's and 60's when Mexicans were called wetbacks
even back then. This is a problem that has been around for many years and is
only now being discussed openly. The problem we have is not immigration itself
but the way in which so many are doing it, illegally. Other countries in the
world secure their borders so why shouldn't we? How many countries in the world
are you allowed to walk across the borders unchecked, I doubt there are many.
We need to know who is entering our country and why. I have no problem with
Mexicans who wish to come here and work as long as they do it legally and at
least try to learn our language. We have a minimum wae in this country and we
must stop the companies who try to increase their profit line by hiring illegals
and pay them below minimum wage. If these companies are stopped from hiring
illegals then the illegals will start deporting themselves. We must also stop
giving free services to illegals. If they don't have legal status they should
not be allowed any free services our tax dollars pay for.
Maybe we need to place several thousand troops on the border of Mexico to patrol
instead of building and admin to see what will happen. Maybe if we had 20,000
troops on the border we will see exactly what Mexico's president is up to.
Maybe he will openly declare war on us and wake up the sleeping liberals who
can't see we have been invaded by Mexico already. There is more going on over

It wasn't in the least surprising to see you once more pursue the tactic of the

Such a common tactic of the weak liberal mindset is this that I almost expected

action chit chat, which I'm sure wasn't your intention in your attempt at
redirection of this issue, Ok ?
The post fossil made at the beginning of this thread is a real world statement
made by a longtime local naturalized citizen of Mexican heritage who just
happens to align himself with the concepts of legal immigration over the
continued illegal immigration debacle and all its sociopolitical implications
that's been ongoing for decades now.
As hard as it may be to grasp that someone of Mexican descent might do so,
there's nothing fishy about the post at all, so get over it, it's for real.
John, you keep carping on endlessly about how this issue is class/race oriented
in nature, but seem to totally miss the whole point which is not about social
class or race at all.
The core issue to this discussion is about respecting our countrys long standing
immigration practices , our laws regarding the same and asking that these
immigrants do the same things expected of any other immigrants here, nothing
more, and absolutely nothing less.
BTW, here's a few of the tenets from the Mexican govt's. policies regarding
immigration to their country, putting the shoe on the other foot so to speak.
Have a look at them and then tell me again how unfair or based in race or class
it is for the US version regarding immigration to this country comparatively :
1. All immigrants to Mexico, are expected to learn and speak the native
language.
2. Any immigrants must be professional or carfstman nature by trade or an
investor. No immigration of unskilled workers will be allowed.
3. All classroom education and government business will be conducted in our
native language, with no exceptions made for immigrating citizens.
4. Foreign immigrants will not be allowed to cast ballots in public
elections.
5. Foreign immigrants will not be allowed to hold political office.
6. Foreign immigrants will not be allowed to be or become a burden to the
Mexican government or its citizens. No applicaions for public or governemental
assistance will be recognized.
7. Foreign immigrants will be allowed investment rights in Mexican business
and industry, but are not allowed ownership of more than 49% of any such
business or industry.
8. Foreign immigrants will be allowed to own property with the following
exception : waterfront or shorefront property. This righy is reserved
exclusively for citizens naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may not publicly protest, demonstrate, publicly display foreign
flags for the purpose of demonstation, contrevene political organization, or
openly criticise the government of Mexico, its policies, nor current president
or his policies. Such actions will lead to deportation.
10. Unlawful immigrantion into Mexico will lead to arrest, incarceration or
deportation at the discretion of the government of Mexico.
