fire doesnt melt steel? I guess i learn something new every day. I always thought if you tossed 3000 gallons of high octane jet fuel on a fire it would melt just about anything.

Beleive what you want. But I have to say something about "...tossed 3000 gallons of high octane jet fuel...", If that's what your factoring on, it's that big fire ball, the initial "high octane" fuel burnig off. I don't know how hot that fuel burn was, but iron, and I refrence pg. 729 in my modern welding text, Iron has a melting temprature of 2790F or 1530C, and if they were steel alloys they could with stand over 1000F more befor melting.
Those buildings didn't insenerate when "your fuel" burnt up, so what?

ditto....the fuel ignited the wheels and other structural metals that will not stop burning. water makes the hot metal explode. on a navy carrier. any plane, on fire, gets pushed off the ship because the wheels alone will burn through the ship. A good example of fuel fire and metal, watch the USS FORESTAL disaster on film. metal burns and melts easily in a tube or container of flame. this has nothing to do with welding, more like kiln science.
