Well my laptop turned out OK, it was actually the hard drive that crapped itself. Good old www.pendrivelinux and I just re-installed to OS and the swap to the back part of the disk. Dodgey I know but itś a workhorse, plus I have a cloned laptop as a backup. Now I use that one for work and the one with the crappy sector is the backup now.
