Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in Rochester , NY . He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have

Another real life experience joke: Workin at a cement plant years ago my foreman was a rather large guy named Larry with a decidedly different sense humor. One night when we were pullin the midnight shift Larry decided to pull a joke on LD, our electrician. Larry had located a flesh colored silicone dildo and inserted a welding rod into it, bent it slightly to give it a bit of an arch, t

That's where the dual boot comes in as it effectively gives you a 2nd mosheen with only one Oh, oh, oh .... and you have to install Winblows 1st if ya wanna do a dual boot. If you install Ubuntu 1st Windows will require you to reformat the partition to install it. If you install Windows 1st, then Ubuntu, Ubuntu will simply repartition the drive and appropriate the necessary space needed on

If you wanna try Ubuntu and prefer a Mac like experience then 11.04, 11.10 or the forthcoming 12.04 distros are for you Pro. If you prefer an interface more "Windozelike" then I'd install 11.04 as this is the last distro allowing the Gnome desktop option (unless 12.04 again allows that option). After installation of 11.04 in the start-up process after you input your username, wh

True story time: While in high school I had a buddy who worked as a checker at the local Safeway grocery store. A lady comes to the register and he begins ringin up her groceries while the bag boy is merrily baggin up her stuff. He gets to the last item in her basket and courteously asks "Will there be anything else Mam?" She says "Oh my! I forgot the Tampax!" to

Sounds like it's doin what it's supposed to, which is good. When I was researchin WCing I also found a lotta disparity in the actual cooling blocks for the CPUs with some really well thought out and made, while others not. Ideally they'd be made of gold, but yeah, like that'll happen

Curious pulse, were you runnin air cooled before so you have comparisons for the new water coolings effectiveness over straight air cooled? When I looked into WC a while back I wasn't impressed with the results and how the systems were designed. Aluminum or copper tubing with flexible connectors would be much more efficient as the tubing itself then becomes a heat transfer media. I bought a

quasi, thanks for the vote of confidence. My point was a discussion on differences between the typical Windows/Mac user compared to a typical Linux person. I agree the whole More, more, more thing has an impact, but that was not where I was goin at all. I own everything but the land I live on and carry a 0$s credit line myself. Speakin of porn empires, a software engineer buddy of mine was in between gigs a few yrs back, and bored, so he wrote a spider program and used it to rip everything from a porn site as fast as his connection could stream it all back to his server. He'd set up one of their 2-3 day $1.99 trial subscription de

I haven't been able to reconcile VM ware in my mind yet, kinda like with women, so ... My best understanding always comes from mentally being able to grok a thing though this has been elusive with VM ware. If it's caching everything into RAM isn't that also depleting the RAM as a resource in a real time sense or is that inconsequential in the grand scheme of things? Any idea what would lea

After loadin up 7 and makin sure it was Ok I installed Ubuntu 10.0

I was seeing some really disheartening signs with 11.04 64 bit and loaded up the 32 bit and watched 'em melt away. I found the 64 bit was hittin 2 of my 8 CPU cores really hard and not handin off core to core which eventually would lead to a CPU failure, or at least give better odds on that happenin. With the older OS I had been runnin most of the time all 8 cores would hover around 15-25% and

The definition of "broke" in this instance is subjective quasi. If somethin isn't workin the way you know it can or want it to, isn't it broke even if it is otherwise functional? There's a total shift in how many Linux users see things compared to how many Windows/Mac users look at things. Windows/Mac folks seem to look at functional programs that consume huge amounts of system

I guess if I didn like to fiddle and tweak everything the way I do it would be a lot easier. But, having gotten so used to Ubuntus total customization like I have, I always like to add in lotsa personal fave touches here and there, which can lead to some serious pitfalls along the way. One of my missteps was in trying to remove the user/shutdown icon off the taskbar which is now lumped togethe
