I've always thought the saying of 'disrespecting the flag', or 'fought and died for the flag' was just weird. A national flag is a representation of a nation, and I can understand disrespecting a nation, or fighting and dying for a nation, and all that nation stands for. However, nations have changed their flags, but it doesn't change the nation. It's usually because the nation has already changed and the new flag represents the nation as it is now, not what it used to be.
