A single sentence doesn't qualify as an essay so he didn't "win" an essay contest.
Awarding someone a winner of an essay competition for having made a simple social statement basically invalidated anyone who actually took the time and effort to write a real essay. Even having given him a participation trophy would have been more generous than was deserved :>/
