First off, I want to make plain the fact that this is not an attempt at America bashing.

Why do Americans state their state in the same way everyone else states their country? Is it that they think of their state as an individual country in it's own right or because they think that we should all know what they mean because they do?

we abbreviate states and pretty much everything we can abbreviate because we are lazy
me i'm from atlanta georgia, but i rather use atl ga instead (more proper use of caps but i am just too lazy to hold shift or hit caps lock)
note: i do not reflect all americans' beliefs and why they may or may not use abbreviations they might do it to save space and time

My guess would be that it was started by the USPS (United States Postal Service) which sorts everything according to zip code anyway...
