What are your views on crime and punishment? I have focused here on two forms that are largely not used in Western cultures but that could make a great difference if brought back.

Corporal - Non-lethal such as flogging, birching or the stocks, etc
Capital - Lethal such as hanging, firing squad, lethal injection, etc

I agree with both capital and corporal punishment (in a humane way and not torture though).

I think capital punishment should be used as penalty for murder, rape, people trafficing, paedophillia, drug-related offenses such as producing and selling, treason, armed robbery or assault and other nasty crimes like these.

I would use corporal punishment for crimes such as muggings (where no weapons is used in any way), fraud, theft, and other so-called 'white-collar crimes'.

I would still use fines and financial penalties for minor offenses though as I realise there are lot's of minor offenses where the above punishments are too severe.

I heard that several years ago in Japan they had several thousand gun related crimes in a single year so the government passed a law that said if a person is found with a gun in their posession they could not prove a justifiable reason they would go to prison for the rest of their lives with no chance of parole but if they used a weapon in a crime (even as just a threat) it was an automatic death penalty. The following year they had 3 cases of this class of crime.

It is amazing how the number of violent crimes increased in the United States when most of our educational system eschewed corporal punishment. I would take it one step further. Some may consider this inhumane, but I advocate that the corporal and capital punishment be effected publically. Historically, crime still happened, but you rarely heard of people commiting crimes (especially violent crimes) because they "felt like doing something." This added the shame factor to the punishment.

Public humiliation and a severe taunting.

That was the nature of the stocks, the person would be left in them for a set period of time (including overnight) but unfortunately this sometimes led to the person being raped from behind because he/she could not stop the assailant or even see them. I too would make the punishments public but with proper security winking smiley

Tiw, did you like it? Being taken from behind by a stranger? It´s just that I got an indication that you wrote from personal experience.

You sound like someone who has forcefully taken a strange from behind and is now taunting him.

physical punishment has proven to be an ineffective tool in rehabilitation or illiciting information. So it's not useful.

If you wish to merely use it as punishment, then I question you as a human being. Why would you feel the need to lower yourself to perform behavior worthy of being punished. That is not honorable or just.

Statistics show that those criminals subjected to capital punishment rarely re-offend.

Crimes that hurt no-one should be punishable by a fine (amount determined by means).
