Oatmeal is good for you. It's full of vitamins and minerals and tastes great. I always have a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, and sometimes at night before bed.

This is disgusting! It should be moved to porn613 before it is seen by the young and impressionable.

Ah, a little bit of lightheated folly to calm things down a bit. What started out as a fun site to post pics of cool places around the world, your favorite dog, or even your car or motorbike has degenerated into a place where you might find your own sister naked.
And all of the negative political bickering is wearing thin, too.

I like to put peanut butter in mine.

That's interesting...do you mix it in, or simply put a dab on top?
Personally, I'm partial to raisins and a bit of cinnamon and some brown sugar. And real maple syrup does it up really good for cold winter mornings.

When I'm camping I'll throw in trail mix as well as peanut butter, feckin' great start to a day of hiking. I particularly like almonds in oatmeal.

This is great! I've started a thread completely off subject (politics)
and everyone's being nice! No arguing or name-calling, threats, or crude comments directed at each other's moms! I've determined that when it comes down to the most basic of necessities, like food, we can all be civil and share things with each other like favorite recipes! Trail mix? Really? Sounds awesome...gonna try that tomorrow.

I mix it all in. Sometimes I make it with half milk, half water, and mix in a bunch of peanut butter and maple syrup. That, plus coffee and fruit with yogurt, is a solid breakfast.

Well, the trail mix was a resounding success. I could not have imagined that a simple fare such as a bowl of oatmeal could be transformed into something so idescribably delicious. My palate is still tingling from the experience. I've gone out on a limb here folks, and have truly been humbled by this bold foray into the realm
of the unknown. I found some other kind of trail mix alongside the normal stuff on the same rack at my local grocers called "ALOHA MIX"
This stuff's got macadamia nuts, dried candied pineapple, thin almond slivers, dried bananas, and other tropical fruits in it. I'm jittery with anticipation, and not sure how this will play out at breakfast tomorrow, but check back for updates I'll be posting! Meanwhile, please feel free to comment or add your own oatmeal recipes. Thanks!

Come on, come on!!! Tell us how it went!
I have only toast and marmalade and the toast goes cold so quickly.
Without an Aloha oatmeal update I might lose hope.
HOW DID IT TASTE?!

I have found breakfast nirvana, friends. The first bite just simply carried me off my feet to the tropics, dazzling sunlight temporarily blinded me, and a refreshing ocean breeze blew through my kitchen windows. Beautiful Polynesian maids scantily dressed in grass skirts suddenly appeared and threw flower Lei's around my neck, and Don Ho's Ukelele music filled the room. Other than that, it was OK.
Guess I'll try it again tomorrow!

Gruff, I caught that. You're right on about the peanut butter, it's quite good! I'm thinking though, peanut butter? Hell, why not chocolate too! Try this...get a package of Reese's peanut butter cups and stick 'em in the fridge for a half hour while you cook up the oatmeal. Take 'em out of the package, and you'll see that the peanut butter cups now break up real easy into small crumbs, or chop up coarse with a kitchen knife. Toss 'em into the oatmeal, and stir until blended. Add banana slices on top, and it's breakfast!
Many thanks for your posts, would never have thought of it.

Good idea about the RPBCs, except for a chocolate snob the brown wax they use in Reese's simply will not cut it. Plus I go for chunky peanut butter.

I don't know if you can get this where you live, but a company called Bob's Red Mill does a great ten-grain cereal mixture that is slowly eclipsing regular oatmeal for me. Worth a try.

You know it was only a short time ago that it hit me: what is commonly called "cereal" now - Wheaties, Lucky Charms, what have you - is not really cereal at all, but a sick parody of the _real_ cereal that people used to eat all the time: oats, millet, and the like. True hot breakfast cereals. I can't eat that boxed shit anymore. I certainly wouldn't feed it to a child.

Agreed, I'm pretty much a product of that growing up in the 60's.
Clever marketing targeted at kids who are sucked in by the colorful cartoon images on the box, a toy of some kind, and lots of refined sugar and who knows what. But doing a little research and being a history buff, I can tell you that this was not how these "cereals" originated, and you are right on the money about the oats, millet, wheat, rice, and other whole grain cereals being much better for you.
Interesting read;

Hey Gruff...
I found "Bob's Red Mill" on the web...as twisted fate would have it, their HQ's is in my city. I'm going on a motorcycle ride tomorrow AM, and I guess I'll stop by the grocer's and pick some up. I don't know if it will kick the box of oatmeal off my pantry shelf, but it's worth a try, eh? I'll keep you posted!

Interesting article, thanks.

You can sometimes find a tin can of "John McCann's Oatmeal" which takes some serious cooking. True full oats, not 'steel cut' at all. I was into that for awhile, but it's an expensive habit. Tasty though, and /heh/ good roughage. I usually purchase (bulk bin) meusli these days, its like Oatmeal++, with dried raisins and things. Tasty. Also, quartered nectarines or nectarines go well in my morning porridge.

The other thing I sometimes do is heat water (or milk, [actually rice milk]), and then pour it over a bowl of the good stuff, letting it sit for ~10 min, then eat. If you use hot water, you can make your tea/coffee at the same time, and pay less attention to careful cooking of the oatmeal. A friend taught me that one.

I LOVE OATMEAL!!! I eat it anyway, anytime. I especially love to eat it straight outta the can. Does anyone else like it sans fluid?

Ummm, that's a tough one, chupa. Isn't it a bit dry?

Thanks for your input John_Stone, I think I've learned a thing or two here. Gruff touts the "Red Mill" stuff as being superior to plain old oatmeal, and you've suggested "John McCann's" as your personal preference. I'm gonna try both and do a side by side. the Red Mill was not too difficult to find, but I've yet to open the package and sample it. However, when I asked about "John McCann's at the grocer's, all I got was a few blank stares, and people at the checkout were looking at each other funny, you know, like when a dog has that WTF? look on his face and turns his head sideways? Well as it turned out, they thought I said "John McCain"...as if a frickin' US Senator knows anything about whole grains and cereals, for Christ's sake!

Not to me, anon 90130. I drink a lot of fluid all the time, so it doesn't bother me to eat things dry. I gag when I try to eat something, say a sandwich, and take a drink at the same time.

We're all different, I guess...but I think I know what you're talking about. I can eat a box of Ritz crackers or saltines without water or any other liquid. I'll be open minded and try eating some oatmeal dry tomorrow.

oatmeal cookies are good. I switch around on oatmeal, ten grain, and other grains. Variety is the spice etc.

90130, why don't you go ahead and get a loginid here at 613.

Not a bad idea, Gruff. I'm an ok guy, shouldn't have to hide behind an anonymous number. The main reason I chose not to get a login ID was because of the politics issue. I made it clear early on in this thread that I was tired of all of the political vitriol being thrown about, so I chose to add a bit of humor by starting a thread completely off topic to see if people here could act civilized.
It appears that despite the wide variance in opinions on any given subject, food and shelter are the most basic of human needs and something most all of us can agree on. Another reason? All of the disgusting porn. A picture of a beautiful woman is one thing, but WTF is it with the non-stop anatomy lessons? I'm glad that the webmasters created a porn613 for people who need that.

Actually oatmeal is great. I like it a lot. My friend however can't tolerate it. Why? Because he eats TOO MUCH fiber! Can you believe that!? An American eating too much fiber? When he adds oatmeal, it just... well... you can imagine.

Fiber is a good thing! Oatmeal has plenty of it, and studies have shown that regular dietary intake of foods high in fiber may greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, prostate and colon cancers. Let's face it, we're not getting any younger...even if you're starting a new diet or health regimen now, choices you make today may benefit you later by sparing you from debilitating disease and illness. A healthy diet is a good start to a long life, and a high quality of life. That said, I think I'll have a bowl of oatmeal!
