Laws and military victories are NOT landmarks. As for the US military in Iraq being a bunch of farmers, get real. The US military is a professional and highly trained (although misguided) force.
I have not been to America (except for a few days in Hawaii) so cannot comment on American landmarks, but to me the greatest landmark I have seen is probably the Eifel Tower. It looks great, seems to have a 'presence', is instantly recognisable, has nothing that compares to it, has a great history, and is connected with a specific place (ie. Paris). I would probably regard the egyptian pyramids and sphinx, and the statue of liberty in the same category, but I have not seen them in person (yet) so cannot be certain. Second and third place of ones I have seen would be Tower bridge, London, and the Sydney Opera House. St Peters Bascilica is up there too, but probably not so recognisable from the outside.
