People, how about some new categories? Politics; Fashion/Fads; Science/Engineering?

Also, could there be a set of check boxes with each of the categories and you select what you want to see? Most of the politics on this site is foreign to me.

Could try the tag cloud

The site isn't really sorted into categories like that though. Tagging pictures is the easiest way to do it. I'd love to have the time but to be honest it's unlikely there'll ever be a material change in features or the site again.

Speaking of; has anybody noticed any performance changes since the hardware migration? Is it faster? Slower? No difference?

Top List faster, login unreliable but cannot replicate. Everything else same same to me.

Cool. It all feels snappier to me, but it's also moved 15,000km closer to us smiling smiley

I wonder if it's noticeably slower for US/Euro visitors.

The hardware it's running on is nowhere near as powerful as it was. But, with the porn site gone, it also doesn't need to be.

The anon bots are getting more sophisticated, must be all the AI tech hitting the mainstream lately.

Added 50% more RAM and 25% more CPU to the cluster today. Because I can. And another 2 php accelerator nodes.

Probably won't notice any difference, but hey ho.

Also moved it directly off the firewall instead of off the network core. So it's a step closer to the internet; not that it'll make any impact to speed since it was sub-1ms response time and 25Gb link.

Things you do when you're bored.

Patched everything tonight.

Need to figure out how to upgrade the PHP accelerators to a later OS. Big job; but at least everything is still current.

smiling smiley The bits that actually run the site, which is all written in PHP, have a bunch of accelerators, caching units and things.

I'm trying to get the site from PHP7 to PHP8. I got 95% of it working last night, but that last 5% is a killer so had to take a backup of my work; restore my previous backup of the accelerators and get the site back online.

I'll flip back to the new image at some point maybe tonight and have another go. I remember the exact same issue was a killer when I moved the hosting to its current setup. Exactly the same error. And I fixed it by doing ...... pj smiley thing ? NFI.

But if I can get this last issue resolved everything is on fully supported LTS Linux images so should be good for the life of the site, basically. Because I'll probably never do this work again smiling smiley

I've got everything working except actually displaying the image smiling smiley

Forum works; gallery works; main page works. But you click on an image and it drops dead.

Ah well whatever, far from urgent.

Today I've changed the reverse ingress proxies for the site.

Hopefully no difference, maybe even a touch faster; but also the one that was there was struggling to cope sometimes and was delivering broken thumb images in eg the gallery view.

Hrm yeah. I'll look into/fix tonight. There's nothing obviously wrong off a 2 second glance.

Okay I've fixed it. And I don't remember how I broke it. I reverted a backup but can't remember what I was changing at the time sooo... neato! smiling smiley

I fixed a bug!

If you click on the tags under an image now it doesn't log you out anymore.

If you find any other bugs where you click on something and it logs you out, let me know where you are and what you click on and I'll try to solve. You're logged out if the little goat next to #plus613 logo disappears.

Along with the hopeful fixing of the random logout which pissed me off no end clicking on tags; I've fundamentally changed the search function today. I may have even done it without breaking it; but unlikely.

2 things have changed.

1) when you search for something, click a link; you can now click "back" in your browser to take you back to the search results without it whinging you need to submit your search again.

2) I've changed the search format to be agnostic about format; eg if you were to search for "red car" it would match an image called "The bright red car" - but would not match an image called "This car is red"; so it treats it as 2 separate search terms but needs to match both.

One thing I wasn't sure about is making it completely agnostic - eg should it match on "A blue car" if you search for red car? This term would also match "A blue sky" if you searched for "blue car" - ie, should it match ANY or ALL words? Right now after my change it will match ALL words in any order. Previously it was ALL words in same order.

You will also notice if you use the search that you can search for something, browse around the page and go back to "search" later and it will still present with the same results you previously had. At first I wanted it to create a new session if you clicked back on search but then I kinda decided I liked it like that and you can always just put in a new term to look for something else.

Thoughts on either?

If you make it agnostic and keep improving the AI then all my years of tagging were for nothing!
Fuck you, stop improving the website.

Haha. Nah, I like the 'real' tags. The AI ones were really only ever to tag images that were untagged. Which was 90% of them. There's a reason the AI ones don't appear in the tag cloud, or "top tags" list etc.

I do like the search changes of the past few weeks though; fixing bugs, fixing the "logout" issue, adding AI text into the results and changing the search format. All feels a lot more useful now, easier to find things you're looking for.

The more tags you do, the more effective it is! smiling smiley

Most of the changes I've been doing are just things that either have annoyed me about the site, or things that I'd like to see; so I'm having to reverse engineer piles of code and database queries and figure out how it all hangs together, then work things forward. That 'logout' bug still kills me. That was a pig for somebody who isn't a web developer to figure out. Turns out it was a bug in DK's code, not something I'd changed. So blah.

After the UPS died a few weeks ago, it was replaced today.

There will be another outage later but things are looking good.
