System upgrades and capacity

All,

We're currently rolling out a whole pile of updates to address a number of speed and capacity issues we've had over the years. This process is now 3/4 complete, with the last (and biggest) change still to come.

We now have a number of different web clusters serving images, and a dedicated server just for thumbnails.

The next stage in the expansion is bringing the new core server online, which is what does the database + html part (eg everything except images).

We're hoping to do this tomorrow. This means that potentially for a few hours after we cut DNS over, you may be looking at the old server, which tomorrow morning Australian EST will have its database frozen and you won't be able to post/add content/etc. Usually DNS fixes itself up in a matter of hours, but in the past when we've done this change we've noticed some people hitting the old system for up to a few days. If this happens, there's not much you can do except wait.

The new core server is MASSIVELY faster than the existing one so all database related queries etc (of which there are dozens on every page you look at) will be significantly faster. Image loading times should be about the same, except we have doubled the capacity there too so there should be no more red Xs (fingers crossed). Having thumbs on its own server will help, too.

All of this has been a very expensive exercise for myself and DK. Thank you to everybody that donated a few weeks ago during our donation drive. We will find a way around our current issue with PayPal and hopefully that great support will continue!

Cheers smileys with beer

PS. Oh yeah, if you notice anything wacky going on after the cutover (which will be announced here when its complete) then please let us know.

Well i'm without internet so unless pulse runs a really long ethernet cable from his place to mine (he lives around 30miles away) it wont be happening until at least monday. And it looks like the method i was aiming to do thumbnail generation is buggy. Maybe i'll find a wireless cafe over the weekend and get it all happening but doubtful.

The new box is very pretty however so it'll be rather exciting to make it happen.

Yeah, I like the new box.

For anybody interested, it's one of these [www.sun.com]

Don't be fooled by the price though, that's for the minimum spec. We've gone all out, multiple processors, huge amounts of ram, fully populated disks, etc. It'll be a beast when it's running in anger grinning smiley

As for not having net access, that's what you get for living in the boon docks. If it was even a mildly populated area you'd surely have some wifi you could borrow winking smiley DK is living in a unabomber style shack in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, slightly better than my sun sparc5 running solaris8, should do the job nicely though.

Hehe..

I'm pretty sure I have a sparc 5 + fully populated (12x9Gcool smiley disk pack in the basement somewhere. I liberated it from a decomissioning project of an old job I had.. I'm not sure if it works, I never really tried it. Probably not worth sending off to a colo smiling smiley

Yep, same here. No images in the gallery, just boxes that are clickable to view the pics & comments.

Yeah a few bugs, big part caused by the housekeeping scripts (eg the things that send images/thumbs to the mirrors) not running. I've run them, porn site looks better than plus site, we'll look into that tomorrow.

It'll take a couple of days to bed down properly, but this will hopefully be the .. last move ever. At least until Google buys us for a couple of $billion.

For sure, there will be plenty to go around smiling smiley

Huge party at 613 HQ.

To be honest though I'd probably accept even as low as $500 million. But don't tell Google that.

For all those desperados who aren't here every 5 minutes smiling smiley We suffered some downtime today. Not sure of the exact cause, core server rebooted and didn't come up cleanly, requiring manual intervention.

All up we were off the air for approx. 12 hours, but if I was trying to fix it at home instead of at work I'd have had the fucker back up in about 10 minutes. Stupid firewalls.

Whee!
