Do you like the new changes? Should plus613 allow video uploads?

I'd like to announce that i've just completed code changes required to allow people to upload short movies to the site (just under 5M max). This is a test to see how well the site copes with the extra server load and bandwidth. Feel free to upload as much content as you wish. I'll update the upload page later once i'm happy with the extra code. You guys will notice that thumbnails are a different size I'm torn as how to make movies stand out from normal image uploads (the thumbs are also animated gifs made from the movie, again this needs tweaking).

Enjoy

At the moment avi, wmv, mpeg should all work. If you have any problems with other formats let me know and i'll see if i can add 'em in.

watch now... that's all that will get ul'd now... most of my movies are way over 5MB (600MB to 3GB range) though so there won't be a whole lot coming from me

Hehe nice work DK, and the thumbnail gifs was a great idea. I have two idea on how to make them stand out,

1) have a small ASCII decal around the videos, like a
....^
.<...>
....V (without the dots, the forum auto edits them out sad smiley)

or something else, nothing intrusive but still visible.

2) Have a translucent overlay over them with a play symbol, but that of course would ruin your lovely gifs

Nice work! You might want to consider not having them auto-play. I tend to open the interesting images off a page in seperate tabs then go through them. Now each one starts playing immediately and what I hear is the audio from all the files at the same time. I'd like to just hit play on each when I get to the tab. Just a thought smiling smiley

pro_junior: what type of movie are you trying to upload. I'm using 2 different mime type checkers, the first (where i think your failing) is purely based on extension of the file (i don't think the webserver has a really updated mime list so i might not have it listed), the 2nd actully looks at the first few bytes and tries to confirm that it's really the type it thinks it is (used around thumb generation).

Leprichan: i thought about some kind of watermark and also of having some kind of marking around the thumb but wanted to keep the gallery list clean. I think by having the animated gifs they stand out enough.

Onyma: I've left the controls active so you should be able to rewind/replay the videos once they are loaded. I also usually open up a few images at a time so i understand your argument, i've seen on some sites that you can use some javascript to only play the video onces the frame/window is active. I'll see if i can hunt that down.

DK, videos are wmv...
I try to upload using firefox and it does not work, then try again using IE, to upload the same video and it works...weird...
anybody else having this happen? maybe it has something to do with the settings on my browser?

Having a dial up conection, I'm used to some slow page loading, and plus613 was actually rather quick loading, but not anymore. I'm not complaining about that but I do find that when I click on an image, instead of that image, I get a block of adjacent verticle images highlighted then the topmost image is what begins to load. I don't mind having videos here but I'd still like to be able to choose what images I'm going to take a closer look at.

I'm not knocking this change, but with so many other video sites out there, is it necessary to make this site another one? Kind of takes away some of the uniqueness of plus613 for me.

i'm on broadband. I click on a video and watch it then click on another and get the same video. I like this site, but i feel that the video's like Quasi said could take away the uniqueness and perhaps ruin plus613.sad smiley

When someone posts a video the gallery seems to link several thumbnails together. When you click on any of the thumbnails linked to the video all you get is the original video with no way to view what was posted just after it.

I'm not getting any of these selection problems, I'm just running stock standard firefox with no plug-ins or add-ons and everything is working like it should

i like the animated thumbs. thumbs down
i kinda agree that the videos should be separate...like be loaded into a parallel universe forum, section, thread like, devoid of the main new uploads page.

i don't know code stuff D.K., but i think your plate just got full. grinning smiley

The uniqueness of the site is that it allows the users to really choose the direction of content uploaded to it, rather than having a webmaster say 'you should look at this'. I think by allowing video uploads (and possibly flash in the future?) It gives users the chance to share more diverse content with each other.

I think the best thing for me to do is to allow you guys as much freedom when it comes to adding content as i can, without ruining the experience (ala porn613 being split). If we do have a large majority of users saying they don't want video content i always have it in my power to either take out the code to allow it, or split the site again into a movie613 (that being ALOT of work however).

Shadez: yah i know the autostart=false, but if you set that i'm pretty sure it'll not start until you actully click start. For people who click on videos one by one i'd like it to autostart of the browser/tab has focus.

quasi: i think the slower access time is because we're using a different provider, we used to be on a 100m/bit link, we're now on a 10m/bit link. We do however have a much larger allowance of bandwidth a month (thus being able to offer movie downloads) than we used too. But i think some people will find the site will be a little slower (bandwidth) than it was before. That said the new hardware the box is running on is around 4x faster so page generation is a hell of alot quicker, so those on DSL should find a increase. Maybe if google would hurry up and buy us out for a few billion we'd be able to use a real server farm winking smiley

pro_junior: are you using the latest version of firefox? Also if you open the wmv file in firefox does it error out or load a internal player? If it loads a external player it should give you a mime-type. I'm all rather new to video uploading so i'm not 100% sure. I think your browser is uploading the video to the site and saying it's text/html and overriding the server in that choice. (when i was doing testing i was getting a similar thing, however the browser was saying the video was a application/bin-hex, which i've added to the accepted mime-types).

DarkKlown,
Yes on the latest version of Firefox..
if I go into my saved videos file and right click on a file and select 'open with firefox' I get about 20 pages of this:
ilhu*^kjfyo87t087t087to77f6ey53WP_(*Yu[089ipuh7553Wig'pjo})_(U*++()U*puyfOUFYyitf^$WEciuty(&

it's really not that big of a deal to me, as long as I can at least upload using IE I'm happy...I just thought that it was weird...

besides the fact that I've already uploaded all of the <5mb safe for plus613 videos that I have saved spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

my vote: I like the video uploads and I like the thumbnails just the way they are thumbs downthumbs down

I haven`t tried to upload any video but when I view them at work they get stuck together (windows with explorer) so that no matter which one I click on I get the one I viewed first, but with firefox at home (mac) no problem.
I think why not have video too. 613 has been changing a bit here and a bit there since it started and that´s good, always something going on.
thumbs down

dk: The box is actually on a 100M link (it should be, we're paying extra for it), it's just the new provider doesn't have the backend network that the last guys did, so the throughput is noticably slower.

Aynway, will be interesting to see how this video experiement plays out, hopefully the users will like it smiling smiley

I really like coming here for the pics and the threads. I can go you Utube or Myspace ect. for all the videos. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a Video613 or something of the like.

I think once we get enough video content i might split the site. Looking thru the code changes i made for the porn613 site it would be alot less work than i originally thought. It'd be nice to have the server grunt to be able to convert all the videos into flash video format however (would make sure all browsers from all OS's are able to view the site).

Being able to use youtube has always been whats kept me back, but lately i think youtube has lost it's direction (being taken over by google probably had a big impact on this) so being in a position to offer an alternative has seen 613 step up. By no means do i ever think this site will be anywhere near the size of youtube but if this and other sites are able to fill the void that youtube has created we shouldn't have a need too.
