I think that FZ's point is that knowledge pursued is far superior to (passive) knowledge provided making the college experience relatively worthless, except for the 'get laid' part. And consider that this is a viewpoint from 1960's USA. College is far more expensive now. This is not to say that you couldn't benefit from the resources available at a university, including the library, if you have the cash.
