Someone the other day gave voice to his apparently deeply held prejudices and with colorful language cast aspersions on me for being born in the north and moved to the south. I came here from the north alright and it just occurred to me that that happened forty years ago last month with everything I owned in my '57 Chevy. I was not quite 20 at the time and my retired father and still working mother had moved here three years earlier. I figured since dad was already in his 70's I'd better get down here in case my folks needed my help. A few years later I helped dad hang Christmas lights the day before he dropped dead. By then I had my own family and my mom needed help so here I stayed. I've worked here, played here, buried a wife here, watched the little town where I've lived all this time get shattered by a hurricane and helped rebuild it - I put down roots here. This has been my home for two thirds of my life and I'll probably die right here. Two of my boys still live here, one a U.S. military veteran and the other a corrections officer for almost 20 years. If moving from one part of the country to another is offensive then I guess my son who moved to South Carolina is bad but the real heinous offense must be my daughter who has lived in Texas for several years now. So if if all that is reason to hate me then hate away.

Damn right I hate people who move. Born somewhere, should die there. Or something.

I don't understand "area patriotism". That just seems weird. Yes you're on a site named after something to do with Melbourne. I was born here and grew up here, at least until my (very) early 20s. I've lived elsewhere and sure as fuck don't plan on dying here. .

Here, we'll have a dig at anyone from anywhere else. As a Melbournian it's my duty to crap on people from Adelaide or Sydney, and God help the two headed jerks from across the Bass Straight. The less said about people from Queensland or WA the better. And Kiwis.. well they're right out. But it's always in jest.

I'm not feeling the love, pulse. We don't have the same animosity to you guys from the West Island.

The love is right there. I practically called you an Australian. Because it'd be rude to call anybody a New Zealander. There's messing around, and then there's taking things too far. Nobody deserves that.

I haven't heard west island before. I like it.

Now go back to shagging sheep.

Regional ribbing is fun but turning to vitriol is just nasty. And if you want to carry folks belonging where they're from to it's extreme then the brown folks down south of the border have more rights to the land than us white boys.

Nothing wrong with Florida. Lived in Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach when I was very young. Low cloud ceiling. The thunder scared the shit out of me.
