40 years ago today in Vancouver, Washington, I stood atop a pile of gravel in my neighborhood and watched mount Saint Helens erupt approximately 50 miles away.

Spent a week with a chic in Yakima who was campin w/her then husband about 60 miles away.

She told me they heard the eruption and thought it was thunder just as she started to do their morning dishes. She said several minutes later she told her husband "Look, it's starting to sprinkle!".

Then she said she noticed when the droplets hit her jacket they were igniting it and said they knew instantly what it was.

They threw everything in the bed of their truck and started the 30 mile trek back to Yakima but she said in another few minutes the ash fall was so thick they couldn't even see the road.

She said the usual 35 minute drive home wound up takin 6hrs monty

Sounds like they were lucky to get out of there..have heard a few stories like that over the years here in the Pacific Northwest..We're also a little concerned about Mount Rainier..if that goes the Puget Sound area (Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, etc) will be fucked.
