Image of the week (thursday the 13th nov 2003) :

Every so often, just the right combination of conditions and events occur to create an unbelievable event-in this case an F-18 passing through the sound barrier. Not only were the water vapor, density and temperature just right, but there just happened to be a camera in the vicinity to capture the moment. The F-18 is actually in transonic flight, with normal shock waves emanating from behind the canopy and across the wings and fuselage. The condition will last for only an instant, and once supersonic flow exists completely around the aircraft, sharp-angled sonic cones replace the normal shock waves. The odds of getting a shot like this are staggering.

Actually, I think that pic was taken aboard an aircraft-carrier. They collected a lot of reporters etc. and put them on the deck. Then flew a jet just as it broke the sound barrier near the carrier. Pretty nice timing by the person who took it.

You can clearly see the top surface of the wing. It this picture was taken from an aircraft-carrier then it too was at 20,000+ feet.

137224 - just because you can see part of the top surface of an aircraft's wing, does not mean you are above it. Surprisingly enough, "banking" was invented for aircraft quite some time ago - even before the wright brothers, or tom pearce. winking

my grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air
across the clouds I see my shadow fly
out of the corner, of my watering eye
