This is actually caused by the water inside the pole turning to steam and expanding when the lightning hits it, it's why some *people* explode when they get hit by lightning.

Me thinks it's a bloody big ball of lightning
stuff the heated steam theory why dosen't my kettle blow up in the morning????

and the sides of the kettle are made of a material that doesn't absorb the water!
