You're not on an American site. We didn't all vote (or not).
How do Australian citizens feel about Trump being rude and obnoxious to their
Prime Minister during their first phone call?
Firstly, no one in Australia gets two flying fucks about being nice to the Prime
Minister of Australia. We don’t need red carpet, we don’t need sucking up
and we don’t need hugs or awkward hand holding or kisses.
There is more at stake here than etiquette.
Australia and the US have a lot of things they work together on. I know most
Americans don’t know shit about the Australian US relationship; they just know
there are a lot of Australian actors working in Hollywood, and Australia is a
nice place Oprah went to once.
But currently, Australia has the closest military and security relationship with
the US. Many people do not believe that, but it is true. Yes, closer than
Canada. Yes, closer than the UK. NOFORN means US only, but recently Australia
has been able to overturn areas of NOFORN. When it comes to US-Australia
partnerships, there are no bounds.
Australia and the US really have been joint powers in at least South East Asia
ever since Australia took in an American refugee called Douglas MacArthur, who
fled to Australia after the US Army and US Navy was defeated in the
Philippines.
The US has elected a President who is putting together an administration which
the world is very worried about. I know the US media is focusing on his domestic
popularity, but it’s the international repercussions that has everyone
nervous. The US relationship with Australia is hypercritical to peace and
stability in Asia.
So there was hope in Asia, that Australia, through its unique relationship,
which transcends politics, transcends presidents, would be able to still find a
functional relationship at some level that would still work. Australia would
become a conduit to the US for intel, strategy, diplomacy, and effectively,
power.
That bond was paid in blood. It wasn’t a freebie.
That no longer appears to be the case. Right now Trump is fighting with his own
administration about things like the Refugee swap deal. It’s quite clear he
hates it. It’s quite clear that people working for him are worried or this
story would not have leaked out of the White House. Think about it. The person
who leaked this story is either listening in on the call or in the room when the
call happened. We are not talking about a cleaner or a clerk.
But it also appears for countries like Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China, etc.
Australia is going to have significant issues being that conduit.
So yeah, I feel pissed off that after all the history here is a country trying
to help the US in the region and he hangs up after 25 minutes of ranting.
It’s not like Turnbull and Trump should have a fair bit in common. Turnbull is
worth at least a quarter of a billion bucks. He is the leader of the
conservative party in Australia. Australia has had a tougher stance on
immigration and migrants than Trump could dream of. Australia invented being
tough on borders.
Australian and the US leaders usually have overtly good relationships. Even when
they are on the opposite sides of politics and terrible things have
happened.
I hope Americans realise that their current leader is undermining their global
position, their relationship with allies and is generally being an arsehole.
That’s not coming from some namby pamby left wing, liberal agenda
conspiracy.

So how do I feel? Pissed off. Because you’re not letting us help you. You’re
not even taking our calls.

In this world of fake news how do we know what really happened if anything on
that phone call? In time we will see if anything comes about in the future
which will point towards that conversation.
Why should we take any refugees at all, there is nothing that says any country
must take refugees into their borders. I would prefer to force refugees to
remain in their country and work to provide a safe haven for them there.
Instead of taking all those people into other countries, wouldn't it be better
if the world works to remove the threats that force the people to leave their
homes in the first place.

According to the UNHCR
The 1951 Refugee Convention is the key legal document that forms the basis of
our work. Ratified by 145 State parties (including the United States), it
defines the term ‘refugee’ and outlines the rights of the displaced, as well
as the legal obligations of States to protect them.
PS, our Prime Minister confirmed it all, and Trump's treatment of Angela Merkel
was fucking disgusting from a head of state.

shakin' the bag full of cats is always a bad choice in hind sight.
unless of course you're talking about Corporate Raiders.
once you guys figure out the real reason for the bag shakin', then you need to
worry.
What's he really want?
Mrkim Report This Comment Date: March 18, 2017 01:46PM
Yeah, I get it, so Angela Merkel should have been given a heart felt hug and a
gold star to pin on her blouse for all the wonderfulness she's welcomed within
her countrys borders instead, huh? Fuck that!
The time has come for the god damned liberal/socialist whine bags to take
responsibility for the folly of their policies and rejection of any act that
could be viewed as coddling is really just a good start in that vein. The signs
of their failings abound and yet they expect a puppy to pet and a mug of hot
chocolate while their societies implode from the weight of their own actions

It's got nothing to do with her policies Kim. What does he care if they let
refugees into Germany?
Sitting there completely frozen with a retarded look on his face while people
are calling out to shake her hand, which is a pretty standard greeting for a
head of state or, i don't know, another human being, then when she asks "do
you want to shake hands" you completely ignore her and sit there frozen
with the same retarded grin..
Seriously wtf is wrong with him?
It's not a policy thing. Its basic human decency. You wouldn't do that and nor
should you tolerate your elected head of state. I'd be disgusted if our PM did
it to an ALLY! Regardless of policies, that's what she and Germany are - some of
your biggest allies.

Ok, in all honesty I'd have shaken her hand, but the "cold fish" is
the best she could expect.
Why does it matter what policies she imposes within her country? Simple, every
such move by any country, friend or foe, to allow rampant immigration is a
bullet in the arsenal of every fuckin whine bag liberalist within OUR borders.
These asshats all point to Germany, France, Sweden and elsewhere as shining
examples of "diversity politics" with expectations of similar
appeasement of that same shit-for-brains policy here

How did shaking hands come about in the first place? It started as a way to
show you are unarmed and not holding a sword when you meet someone. How did it
get perverted to show a friendly meeting? I never liked shaking hands and only
do so now when a hand is extended to me, I never initiate. Maybe tradition
should be changed or done away with on some of these things. Maybe the
tradition of wearing a business suit in all jobs should be done away with as
well. Is wearing a suit a way of setting oneself above and apart from a lower
class?

i have always been a firm believer in shaking someone's hand
looking them in the eye
and repeating their name...."nice to meet you.....dick"
within 10 seconds i still can't remember their name.
but it's funny as hell every time.
jgoins Report This Comment Date: March 21, 2017 12:16PM
I have never believed in shaking hands but not for the same reason as Howie
Mandel, I am of afraid of germs. I always look people in the eyes unless they
are good looking women then my eyes drift. People can see I don't have a weapon
in my hands without extending it. Of course my weapon is always in a holster on
my belt and can generally be seen clearly. I just don't hold with many of the
old traditions.
