I don't understand why the use a watermark anyway, they don't own the rights to any of these pics. The watermarks should be the copyright owners mark only.

A watermark is a brand, they used to all read "as seen at blah.com" so that people would check out your website. I'm not sure it has the same effect these days but it's still cheap advertising.

Technically none of those are watermarks and it's a misnomer.

To me whatever those marks are, show onwership and should not be used if you don't own the image. Kids school pictures all have the photographer's mark on them to show copyright.
