Well BMW did start out making aircraft! (For those that don't know, the round
blue and white BMW badge is supposed to be symbolic of a spinning propellor.)

Ah, Gak...Mr automotive historian.
The circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is often alleged to portray the
movement of an airplane propeller, to signify the white blades cutting through
the blue sky. An interpretation that BMW adopted for convenience in 1929, which
was actually twelve years after the roundel was created.In fact, the emblem
evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo, from which the BMW
company grew. The Rapp logo was combined with the blue and white colors of the
flag of Bavaria to produce the BMW roundel so familiar today.

Yeah well Ralph never got up the front very much, he was a bit excited.
I am not sure if Williams were using BMW engines back in 2002 though...

Williams were using Beemer engines in 02 berto, and yes Ralf wasn't up front
very often, although he did win the next race that year.

I'm pleased to see there's some F1 buffs around here
I'm not sure if I'll be making the race this year, but will def be at the
qualifying if not. Obviously for the Melbourne one ...
Looking forward to a good year, hoping all the rule changes have evened out the
teams in the middle and will let somebody who's not in a silver or red car have
a chance at winning some stuff.
Even if they are the ugliest F1 cars .. probably ever.

Definitely an F1 fan here - but am afraid I am a fan of the silver cars - team
started by a Kiwi and all that.
Have only been to one race weekend - Melbourne '99 - but do have a unique
souvenir - I caught Eddie Irvine's Ferarri cap he threw into the crowd after the
winners podium!
Agree with your comments pulse about the ugliness of the '09 designs - but at
least they have cleaner lines than last year with all those silly appendages!

I don't mind the night race idea, but I doubt it'll fly. They're starting at
5pm this year, I doubt it'll get any later, at least during the current contract
til 2015. I love the sound of them, it's nice living fairly close to the track
(though I used to work directly opposite it, had a great view).
I've always been a McLaren supporter, but I just don't like Lewis.. his smugness
has really put me off them. Last year I found myself going for Massa, but I like
Alonso too (which is funny, I hated him until he went to McLaren). Obviously
I've gotta support Webber too. He's still on crutches but expected to be fine by
the time of the first race -- fucking lucky.
Bring on the '09 season! Hopefully somebody good will buy Honda F1 and soon,
because they've only got a couple of days left (I think Feb 1st).

Different strokes for different folks! I can't stand Alonso and went off
McLaren a bit when he was driving for them. I think he is arrogant and surly,
and highly over-rated. I also think Hamilton is breathing life into a formula
that was on the brink of collapsing under it's own weight, and it's not out of
the woods yet (hmm, wonder how many more cliches I can work in).
I do agree with you about Massa though - he is a great driver with a great
attitude.
As for the sound of the cars - I love it. When I went to the 1999 race they
were selling survival packs at the gate, consisting of earplugs, sunscreen and
paracetemol. Had sunscreen with us so didn't buy any. We were as far from the
pits as you could get when the first car started up, but turned to each other
and said 'we're gonna need those ear-plugs'. Have not heard Indy cars, but have
been told there's nothing like the sound of an F1 car!

Yeah you can hear them clearly from miles away. It's amazing the noise they
make! I went to qualifying last year, and tbh I couldn't really tell the
difference between the current V8s and the V10s I saw a few years ago. Anything
revving at 19k+ rpm is going to be pretty loud and pretty high pitched.
They'll all be limited to 18,000rpm to try and get 3 races out of them this
year. Probably won't be a noticable difference.
I'm worried about F1 though. With this year's ugly ass cars, and all the cost
cutting measures, I think the 'pinnacle of motorsport' is beginning to sink.
