A common recent practice for companies with automated phone answering systems (which most all do now!) is to have the recording tell the caller to press "1" for instructions in English or press "2" for instructions in Spanish.

This pisses a lot of us off since English is still (for the moment) the most common tongue spoken here and it seems uncalled for that we should have to make any language selection at all!

Some companies have actually paid attention to the English speaking customers displeasure about this and have now implemented systems where English is the default languge used by the system and then have a recording that says press "1" for instructions in Spanish.

While this all seems well and good, for folks like myself, any need for a language other than English seems totally like a BS move, most especially when in this case it is typically to make it easier for members of the Mescan community who live here but refuse to learn the fuckin language, making it an appeasement move to a segment of our society that thumbs their noses at the rest of us

I agree with Mr. Kim, and not only that but think of this. Most people that take the trouble to actually get green cards and esecially citizenship learn English. They can at least speak enough to understand the first part of an automated phone system.

When we cater to Spanish as a second language we make things much easier for illegal aliens, most of which are Spanish speaking. If we don't want them in America illegally then why are we making it easier for them to be here?

This especially hits home for me living in Florida where we had to actually declare English the official state language since Spanish is spoken so prominently here. I just got back from the Miami area and over half the radio staions down there are in Spanish.

It's so bad down there people get all freaked out in the Miami international airport and just about panic thinking they landed in Cuba by mistake because everyone is speaking Spanish and almost no one is speaking English. Even most of the official notices over the loud speakers are in both English and Spanish, or even just Spanish confusing them even more.

I think this needs to change.

I we moved to Germany would we not need to learn German, or if we moved to France learn French Or Italy Italian? Why is it so difficult to require our residents to learn English? If we moved to Mexico we would need to learn Spanish so why shouldn't Mexicans learn English. Another thing, If we moved to Mexico we can't own land there so why can they own land in America?

You guys crack me up! This isn't about being PC, pampering to the illegal aliens, or some sort of conspiricy. It's about MONEY! Why do businesses cater to spanish speaking customers? Because they want their money, just like they want yours. Businesses aren't racist, they'll take money from any body. Get a life people and stop worrying so much!

I was stationed in Crete for 6 omnths and I learned enough Greek to get by but most the Mexicans who come here illegally won't even learn that much English, It is not our duty to learn their language to cater to them.

If you would care to read more about it in reality the native americans actually stole their lands from somebody else, through history some tribe conquered/displaced another tribe, so the white man was just another tribe that took it from them, also the spaniards and french took lot of land from the indians and I don't see you bitching about it....

America has been speaking English since beofre becoming a nation so English should be our primary language. Even if we require English to be spoken in most situations it will never be required in all situations. You would still be allowed to speak your native tongue in your home and to others who speak it, so no one would lose their heritage just because they are required to learn English.

It's a proven fact that 90% of mexicans,or wetbacks as we call them here in California, have an IQ of around 85. With this in mind how can we expect retarded wetbacks to learn a 2nd language, when they can barely speak one?

If a country were to send their military to invade our country then all Americans would unite to repell them, would they not? So the best way to invade America is for the military to not were uniforms or carry weapons. Just walk accross the border over time and take up positions around the country and when enough arrive arm themselves from the abundance of weapons in this country and then choose a time to strike. We have allowed Mexico to successfully invade America and now we are just waiting for the hammer to fall.
