Looks to me as though the pilot probably didn't make it either. Ejecting at
that acute an angle at ground level usually does not end up good at all. That
seat is designed to travel about 250 feet, but travel UPWARDS. But wait! There's
more! There's a handful of shotgun-shell sized charges positioned at belt anchor
points and a couple more to inflate bladders that essentially blow the pilot
away from the chair. Then the chute opens by the use of other explosive charges
but at anything less than 200-250 feet the pilot may as well have no chute at
all.

Don't know the details about this but looks like the pilot waited till the last
second to eject, probably trying to get the plane away from the crowd...

SU 27 crash in Ukraine 2002. 85 dead 100 injured. Pilot and copilot survived.
