Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission
established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. His
last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third picture below. The US Forest
Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's
38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker
. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and
managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38
caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body) it only
wounded the bear - and probably angered it. The bear killed the hiker an
estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest
Service worker.

A .45 caliber auto with +P frangible hollowpoints may have been more effective.

Grizzlies are some really bad boys & this cat found out just HOW bad in a
pretty frightening way :>(
That .38 wasn't much against a bear of that size and without a good head shot it
wasn't likely to do much. I think I'd have had to have saved the last shell and
done my best to put the barrel right in his muzzle before pullin the trigger.

i saw this pic on a the discovery channel this guy loved bears and got dropped
by helicopter into some remote place claiming bears were harmless and dont
attack unless provoked a few days into the trip he had his girlfriend come for
the last 3 days(i think)when the helicopter arrived to pick them up they found
the distroyed camp found this body 200m away never found his girlfrend im pretty
sure there is more to the story aswell

Funny how stories on the net get all mixed up. I watched that movie too and was
thinking the same as you 163127.
At least "grizzly man" got some great footage before he become bear
dung.

A 45 will not penetrate the bear enough to hit vital organs.. nor will the
38.
The 7mm must of been badly placed shots.
I carry a 357 in bear country. Be lucky if that'd kill with bad aim.
