Those would be so-called "depleted uranium" shells that the US forces use to incinerate Iraqi tanks. Unfortunately the sheer tonnage of this ordnance has spread a fine radioactive dust across Iraq, and into central Asia, raising Leukemia and cancer rates well above statistical averages.
