Duane
Sandra D was a judge before being chosen by Reagan. The religious right always
he OConnor's nomination against Reagan.
Harriet Miers has never been a judge and is used to following orders rather than
making up her own mind.
That is sure to piss off the religious right again. They want someone who
marches into the SC with bible in hand. I don't know if you saw her trying to
quell the religious right's fears about her by talking about god and faith when
she was nominated.
Miers has always supported big business as a lawyer. That is what Bush wanted. A
pro business jurist on the court for 15 years.
This has been a running theme for all of Bush's appointments. They must support
the business interests that Bush wants. Not the country. Bush and his daddies
cronies.

* Miers has never held a judicial post.
* Miers had a very distinguished career as a trial litigator, representing such
clients as Microsoft, Walt Disney Co. and SunGard Data Systems Inc.
* Miers also served as general counsel for the transition team of Governor-elect
George W. Bush in 1994.
* She was appointed assistant to the president and staff secretary on Jan. 20,
2001.
* In 2003, Miers was promoted to assistant to the president and deputy chief of
staff.
* Miers has served as counsel to the president since February 2005.
* Valley View Christian Church in Dallas was Miers's church from 1980 until she
moved to Washington, D.C. to work for Bush. The church is evangelical.
* Ron Key, former mininster at Valley View Christian Church and longtime friend
of Miers, said about Miers's religious views, "her personal views are
consistent with that of evangelical Christians...You can tell a lot about her
from her decade of service in a conservative church."
* In 1995, George W. Bush, then Texas governor, appointed Miers to chair the
Texas Lottery Commission. Her tenure has been criticized, however. In 1997, the
commission under Miers hired Lawrence Littwin as executive director, but then
fired him five months later. At the time, the contract to operate the lottery
was held by the politically-connected GTech [10], which had obtained the
contract with the help of a former Lieutenant Governor of Texas (Democrat Ben
Barnes) [11]. Littwin, as director, began an investigation into whether GTech
had made illegal campaign contributions and whether GTech owed the commission
millions of dollars for breaches of its contract. He stated that Miers ordered
him to stop the investigation. He brought a lawsuit alleging that he was fired
in retaliation for the investigation and to ensure that GTech would keep its
contract. [12] According to Texans for Public Justice, GTech paid Littwin
$300,000 to settle the suit. [13]
* While many Democrats and leftists criticized her lack of judicial experience,
Republican and rightist critics went even futher, arguing Miers lacked any clear
"conservative credentials."
