And the great depression began just a few weeks after my dad reached adulthood in 1929 though was able to do well after the war as a union factory worker.

So it's productivity v prosperity? Sad to see it highlighted like this. The world always talks about increasing prosperity but looks like that's not even on the cards. Productivity is all governments care about and that is global me thinks.
