As someone who has faced this multiple times but had the ability get out of
harm's way, watching this worst of storms bearing down on thousands of people
trapped on an island is agonizing. This will be very, very bad.

I saw something on the news earlier that most people are refusing to go to
refuge centres, they're staying in their villages/shacks/homes to protect their
belongings from looters.
So most likely a lot of people are going to die to protect their stuff.

That happens here as well, and when I decide to leave I go no farther than I
need to get out of harm's way so I can return as quickly as possible, but that's
more about starting repairs ASAP than worry about looters; I don't have much
worth stealing, lol. Something that gets some people killed here is a sense of
complacency, they think, "Well, the last hurricane(s) turned out to be not
that bad here so I'll just ride this one out." That's what happened in 2022
just a few miles from here on Fort Myers beach during hurricane Ian and a bunch
of people died when pretty much the entire island went under three to five
meters of storm surge water and waves. Just a few miles difference of where a
storm comes ashore or a variation in size or strength can make a huge difference
in the outcome and some of the most experienced people who should know better
become susceptible to that deadly complacency.

Hurricanes are just backwards cyclones right?

Something like that. Same thing, really.
