Did a screenshot when I heard the lightning last night and checked the radar. The two overlapping strikes are about 7 miles/11 km from the rain. This was at night, but I've seen lightning bolts travel long distance from storms to clear areas in the daytime, one of the perks of living in the lightning capitol of the US.

Yeah, it's a real blast. The saying here is, "When thunder roars, go indoors." Even if it's clear where you are, if you can hear it, it can get you. It happened to some people at a beach last month and one of them died.
