What is a "consultant position" supposed to be?
I would describe myself as a consultant and I have never had to do a job
interview.
Consultants just get good at something and then businesses ask them to come and
sort out their shit.
I mean, yeah you have dinner or drinks to discuss the scope, outcome, KPI's and
reasonable expectations,
but that's to convince the consultant that they want the gig, not for the
employer to interview.
For example, a Project Manager who gets the big bucks would have to interview.
But once they get the job they then hire a few consultants to tackle various
areas. The Project Manager has already come up with the big picture, the
consultants figure out how to achieve it using the available resources
(including training staff that hate change). I sure would love some of that
Project Manger money but fuck that level of responsibility.

Yeah then you'd have to deal with some asshole like me. You don't want that
shit.

I've had a couple jobs like that:
1] The weekly newspaper thing where they wanted to see me at work for a week...
basically finishing their issue for them. I got paid out of the office manager's
pocket.
2] The computer store that would call an applicant, have them there for a week
or two on a trial basis, then move to the next applicant. I was shown the stack
of applications with some words to the effect of "we will never have to
hire anyone to fill the position" by the manager.
