No, it's not a horse or an elephant either. 3 cm is about 1 1/16 inches PJ.
Hint, it is not a mammal.
pro_junior Report This Comment Date: February 11, 2013 01:37AM
3 centimeters is about 30 millimeters...
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: February 11, 2013 02:09AM
Exactly.

1 1/16 inches - that's one inch and one little mark on my tape measure, right?
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: February 11, 2013 02:22AM
Depends on the particular tape measure. On mine for the first 1 foot one edge
has marks in 1/32nd increments, the other has 1/16th.

Are we giving up on this one?
Let's review some info about it.
It is a skull of an animal.
It has no lower jaw bone to speak of, although I have found there is what could
e considered a "residual" jaw bone and several other very tiny bones
not attached to the skull none of which would help any of us ID it anyway unless
someone was a scientist specializing in this kind of creature. So that tells you
a lot abut how it doesn't eat; it does not chew or bite. So how does it eat?
It does not have a long tongue so it doesn't get food that way like an anteater
or hummingbird or lizard. Not having a long tongue or lower jaw bone pretty much
rules out snakes too.
It is not a mammal.
It is not a bird.
It is not a toad or frog.
It is not a shark or ray or seahorse.
This skull is 3cm in length although the size of the creature can be larger or
smaller and I understand they are capable of getting much bigger in the right
conditions.
Fossil, please tell us what you think or thought it is for fun. I don't think
you know, at least not for sure, but it would be interesting to get your
thoughts. You might know, it would not surprise me if you did but I think
everyone else has given up on it and you are as close to an expert as we've got
here on such things.
One more BIG clue... it is a fish.
Put on the thinking caps.

No functional lower jaw.
pro_junior Report This Comment Date: February 13, 2013 12:49AM
no, I was saying that he is a large mouth bass..not guessing at the pic
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: February 13, 2013 12:55AM
Oh, ok.
Yeah Q, that Bass-O-Matic would pulverize this little sucker. The skull is
pretty fragile and in this top shot you can see that it has already started to
separate. We were fortunate to have found it as intact as it is.
I'll reveal what it is shortly. I think everyone has given up. No blame, it is a
tough one to guess. That is why I chose it, but I have also given a lot of
clues, even in this edited comment, if anyone figures that out.

I knew it would be a tough one. This skull was all we could find after our
pleco disappeared a few months ago. It was poking out of the rocks in the bottom
of the tank and my daughter saw it and pulled it out. we were pretty sure it was
the fish's skull but had to look up things to make sure.
Here is the image I found that most closely matched:

BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: February 14, 2013 01:36AM
Have you tried turning the flash off?
I've read plecos can get pretty darn big and seen some big ones in pictures. How
long have you had it?

he's 2 years old in a 55 gallon tank.
i have a friend that has a 1200 gallon with 3 that are 2 foot long each, but
they are like most fish....they will not out grow their tank.
BlahX3 Report This Comment Date: February 14, 2013 04:31AM
Only a 10 gallon tank here. Just one spotted goldfish (Spot) and a new Plecky 2
now. Used too have a fantail but it croaked before Plecky 1 did.
