I've done it but certainly not that close.

It would make your death quicker and less painfull than if you just tried to
run.

That is a good point. The only time I have been nearly as close as this pic
shows to a bear I stood there for 1/2 a second and remembered camping in
Yosemite as a kid and the rangers telling us to bang pots and pans together
because bears hate that. So I went in the house and got a pot and a lid and came
out banging them together and that bear took right off back into the woods
immediately. It definitely didn't like that sound at all. They don't seem to
like shiny metal objects either. Once at the same place where we lived my wife
saw a huge bear at the edge of the woods and she had the camera with her. As
soon as the sunlight hit the camera the bear took off and unfortunately she
didn't the picture. She was far enough away to not be in any danger, if there
really is such a thing with bears. Those animals are pretty fast on their
feet.
Here is an interesting story you may not have seen about a bear saving a man
from a cougar in California:

Yeah, good video. I don't think running is a good idea, although it would
naturally be a person's 1st impulse. Perhaps the bear was a little disoriented
by the environment and that worked in the guy's favor.
