The story I like best about the platypus is that when the first taxidermied specimen was taken back to England every body thought it was a practical joke, that somebody had stitched together parts of different animals.

Debatable whether it is venomous or poisonous.
And it's a monotreme which I suppose is still a mammal but maybe not.
