I always thought the fuel filler in the pillar was an interesting placement.

To me it was handy as a pocket on a shirt!
This was the car I cut my teeth on when I 1st started doin automotive modifying.
After having had to resort to buyin whole cars just for spare parts (junkyards
here usually just crushed 'em when they came in) and makin/modifying stock parts
and parts from other cars to keep it goin I eventually gave up on 'em as too
much trouble to maintain in the mid nineties.
The one I had was a blast to drive, handled like a slot car and gave me many
hours of pleasure, maybe even close to the time I lovingly spent workin on it,
but the difficulty in gettin parts eventually overcame my joy of ownership.
I have only seen maybe 2 or 3 of 'em on the road here in the last 10 yrs ;(

It is a handy placement. I'm a fairly tall guy with back issues so the less
bending down the better.

Nah, mine was a maize color with a black vinyl top and the next model year,
which had matching vinyl bumper covers. This one is the only pic I could find
with a trunk spoiler. Even the rear spoiler was pretty different on mine since
it had tips on either side of the trunk that were actually bonded to the
fenders. Never saw another one with a rear spoiler like the one mine had.
Though it was done well enough to have come from the factory with it I don't
think they ever made any like that so ....
Also, this was a right hand drive model

And weren't they sold as Mercurys in the US?

They were sold in the US by Mercury, but they were never badged as a Mercury.
Matter of fact, they weren't even badged as Fords either. The only badging I
ever found was a tag on the kick panels that said "Body By Ford".
The US models (built in Germany) had Capri across the nose and tail, while the
German and English versions said Ford instead. Also, the ones imported to Canada
were from England and not Germany, and were also badged as Fords.
These cars were fairly popular and Ford europe got the $$ instead of
Ford/Mercury in the US and with Ford feelin the pinch in the Mustang market
from the sales, they simply stopped importin 'em. They were built on onto the
early 80s but I think 76 or 77 was the last year we got here

pics of the color I had but they're so fuzzy I didn wanna post 'em
