Tried Linux (Ubuntu) but have gone back to Windohs
Made my computer faster and was easy to install and run, but the lack of
software available for it, plus how hard it is for somebody like me who is not a
computer whizz to load programs onto it and get them running meant it was not
right for me.

To me, the best idea for people tied through software to MS products is to use
Ubuntu to do their email and surfing chores and then Winblows for the tasks they
have to use it for .... offline! That way you get the protection and safety of
linux where necessary and then can use MS stuff safely too.
I successfully converted my business computer to Ubuntu about 8 months ago with
the exception of Quickbooks. Though there are plenty of linux alternatives
available it would have required countless hours of inputting our old data so
instead I opted to just keep an old XP machine that lives offline and I use it
as necessary to enter financial stuff which works fine

Hardly ... dunno how much smoother or more full screen you can get than what I
have already, so
As an aside I've personally weened 5 users just this year off Winblows and onto
Ubuntu. In that same time period I've yet to have known one confirmed Linux
person who has switched to Windoze

I'm seriously considering putting Ubunto on this laptop. I can't remember the
last time I did anything on it that couldn't just as well be done on Linux. Web
surfing, e-mail, occasional, very minor photo editing, writing in notepad for my
website. Not having Flash would just be bonus. I
hate Flash.
Mrkim Report This Comment Date: October 01, 2009 11:39PM
The latest version of Firefox for Ubuntu allows you to enable any flash
application individually on your screen if you want. Every flash application on
a page will have a "flash" icon and you can run it by clicking on the
icon or else the icon is all you ever have to see. Works great for keepin the
damned bubbles from streamin by at the top of this page

To be honest I'm not too fussed about the operating systems I use. I have a lot
of involvement in a wide variety.
The laptop I'm typing this on is a macbook air, osx 10.5.8. My desktop is
running Windows 7 x64. My fileserver runs a customised Linux kernel, as does my
other box. My other laptop is a Toshiba running windows xp.
All of the website stuff runs Linux, a number of different hardware
platforms.
At work, I'm an infrastructure designer. As part of that I design and maintain a
fleet of 300 sun servers running solaris 10 unix.
Every machine I use has a specific task, and the operating system chosen is
chosen for that task. In my case, I wouldn't have anything other than Windows on
my desktop. I don't use xwindows (gnome/kde/cde/whatever), I honestly hate it.
I'm a command line unix/linux user only.
