Funny how Jeep fights so hard now to protect their trademark on the 7 slot
grill when the original Jeep actually had 9.

Didn't know about the fight for the seven slots, and wouldn't know until I
check, but I'd guess that the original civilian jeeps (CJ's) may have had seven.

After having had to maintain a Jeep Cherokee my Mom has had for the last 2 yrs
my sentiments are ..... what a major piece of shit

<- One just waddn enough !
I've replaced the MAP sensor, 3- o2 sensors, brake proportioning valve (NEVER
seen one of these fail on ANY CAR!), replaced 2 cat-cons (related to failed 02
sensors), replaced 4 front brake rotors, rebuilt the (auto) tranny at 140k,
replaced 2 sets of motor mounts and for some reason the passengers side mount
likes to shear off one of the bolts in the block when it goes and short of
pullin the motor the only way to remove the broken bolt is with exacting use of
a 90 degree drill and a damned good EZ out, removed radiator tranny cooler from
the loop and replaced with totally isolated external cooler (which the dumbasses
at the tranny shop bypassed and reinstalled original cooler!), replaced interior
fan switch and it's dying again already (only works on medium speed now) and
tons of other shit I can't even recall at the moment.
She would never own another Jeep and I'd DAMNED sure never have one

Very funny. When I saw this pic the VERY FIRST thing that came to mind was the
"trademark grill slots", then I see it was the very first thing on
someone else's mind too. kudos

I concur with Mrkim's observations regarding the reliability of Jeep Cherokees.
I can always count on Chrysler Corporation to keep me in in the repair business
as long as they keep makin' cars and trucks.

BTW Mrkim, funny you mentioned the broken motor mount plate bolts in the RH
side of the block.
I had one limp in with the engine resting on the front axle, and the resulting
misalignment of components tore the radiator fan off and destroyed the shroud,
and mangled the shift console and lever.
The owner actually drove it in like this, stuck in second 'cause he couldn't
shift it into any other gear.
Had to heat up the sheared bolts in the block to soften the Loctite so I could
drill and extract 'em. I use a Snap-On 90 degree pneumatic drill and reverse
twist carbide tipped drill bits.
Lotsa work and it pays well.

OK guys, since my beloved International Harvester quit making Scouts nearly 30
years ago I figured the place to go for a true American classic small 4x4 was
the Jeep Wrangler. Since I'll soon be out of the child raising business and
looking to have a little fun I may be in the market for something like that but
you guys have burst my bubble. Where do I go from here?

Maybe out of the frying pan and into the fire as far as reliability goes, but I
think the Land Rover Defender 90 and 110 are totally cool.

Oh, and an H1 is tits on wheels, too. Not the wanna be H2 or totally laughable

I heard horror stories about Jeeps and don't know anyone who has one. I do
know people who have Land Rovers and Land Cruisers.
