There has been no proof Bush lied. If ther had been proof he would have been impeeched but there is no movement in that direction. He might have had faulty intel but that does not mean he lied. There are many of us who wouldn't even care if it was total lies as long as we can remove Saddam from Iraq. There are many of us who understand the need for having a strong prescence in Iraq. All one has to do is look at a map of the region to see why we need to be there. The picture is much bigger than Iraq alone. There is more going on in the middle east you people are afraid to admit. You are fools if you can't see that it is better to take on the terrorists in that region than it is to do it here. You may also see us invade Iran to prevent Israel from using nukes on them and bring about a total nuclear exchange in the region.

The way I heard it, we had a presence in the M.E. (or is it West Asia?) back some time ago, and the Al Qaeda types got their start by bombing our shit in their land (well, after we trained them to kick the Russians out of Af'stan). After some successes (eg. the Beirut bombing) they ramped up and figured they could take us on.

... so now we're back over there, in force, converting new generations to terrorism and guerilla warfare, and spreading bomb-making skills amongst the populations.

... so why are we over there again?

Bush is right now running about 20% approval rating from self-identified independents. In fact, but for idealog right-wingnuts who STILL can't face the fact that this guy is a zero, he essentially has no support at all in this country. He is already a lame duck President with 3 years left to serve. God help us all -- and the rest of the world too, because they need us whether they want to admit it or not.

How far can one FSA go? Well, in 2003, one was used to secure the records of guests in hotels in Las Vegas over a four-day period: 250,000 people (the investigation was inconclusive). The use of NSLs is common, but us hearing about them is rare: NSLs come with gag-orders that prohibit those who receive them from discussing them.

Issued by FBI field supervisors, national security letters do not need the imprimatur of a prosecutor, grand jury or judge. Yes, the f.b.i., c.i.a., d.e.a., or any other federal investigative agency should have access to whatever means necessary to prosecute criminals to the full extent of the law, period! I don't see it as an infringement of privacy, but the protection of innocent people. if someone is suspected of commiting a crime, they should every peice of evidence available to them for their case. wash. post, don't bother with it.

My concern with the patriot act is that it completely sidesteps protections afforded and guaranteed by the US constitution. As a law abiding citizen, I guess I shouldn't worry, but it still begs the question; how much information do they have on you, and how are they using it?

I still can't believe that the "Black Helicopters of the UN" people, the Patriot Movement from the late 1990s and other right-wing wackos are not just going nuts about the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act extended federal government reach in ways never even dreamed of during the Clinton Administration.

In my mind this shows one of 2 things -- (1) these people are still trying to reconcile being against the concept with the fact that they support the creators of the legislation (in which case they will go nuts if a Democratic administration ever comes into office) or (2) they all just needed a real crisis around which to center their lives and now they have that in the "Global War On Terror" and no longer need the old conspiracy theories.

The House budget vote was supposed to reestablish the Republican commitment to a smaller government that would change the federal approach to Medicaid, food stamps, agriculture subsidies, student loans and a host of other programs.
